I am sooooo glad I got a second opinion!

I just wanted to advise you all, if you ever have a biopsy that turns up with any kind of dypslasis...please, get a second opinion.

 I have shared this before, but I just recently got the results of the DNA. I moved from Dallas to Central Texas and recently had a colonscopy that showed ONE cell with dysplasia(very unusual). A total colectomy was recommended and they scheduled an appt with a surgeon in their facility right away.  Needless to say and some of you know, I was a basket case. I would not consider surgery without a second opinion from my Doc in Dallas. A second opinion was not even recommended from the first GI Doc and surgeon. To make a long story short. The second opinion found the dysplasia so strange that they sent it off to have it DNA tested to make sure it was my cell. I just found out that the cell was contaminated and it isn't my cell! I am so excited and relieved.

My disease is progressing and I know there is a possibility for surgery in my future, but not right this second...Whew!

I really wanted to let you guys know that this kind of mistake is a possibility, so please.....get a second opinion. It saved me from a colectomy right now.

Now there's a doctor who's on the ball!!! Good news for sure pupluv...I can imagine your relief!!!

Are you switching doctors? I would, especially since the doc didn't suggest a second check.

Hi Quincy- I am absolutely going back to my doc in Dallas. Its quite the drive(3.5hrs), but I don't trust anyone else. Hmmm....imagine that. I've been through so much this past month. Maybe at some pt. I will feel comfortable with a Doc here, but not at the moment.

I sure am loving life right now!

That is great news! I'm so sorry though that you had to be put thru all that. That definately is an eye opener for sure and to remind us that not everything is 100% correct all the time.

So glad to read that you pursued the Q with a doctor you can trust & it definitely helped!!!!! There are a lot of incompetent & possibly unscrupulous MDs in practice, who seem not to care how much unnecessary anxiety & even physical harm they cause to patients. We have to carry our own flag & be especially cautious where surgery comes into play. The NY TIMES Sunday magazine did a long research article last yr in which it exposed the fact that major hospitals especially profit from the blood & tissue they remove from patients-- this includes organ removal! They are happy to have a patient's extracted colon to use in their medical school research projects, etc. Something sinister to think about-- but plausible. / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC; currently on 3 X 3 Colazal daily for July flare in descending colon, which is responding)

I just can't believe that such a large part of my anatomy was at such high risk of removal so quickly(eventhough i've had colitis for 15 yrs). It really made me open my eyes about the possibility though. I'm already upgraded to azathioprine and i'm doing a little better, but with everything that happened this month I'm definitely not under complete control. I'm still trying to get over the shock of all this. I'm thrilled I can come here for advice and comments on how everyone else keeps there flares at bay. I will be here often.

I would LOVE to know the surgeon and doctors reply who originally advised against second opinion and were in a rush to cut.

now now....here's another opinion.....

(I'm not speaking on necessity of second opinions here)

I'm not necessarily protecting the doctor here, but you have to realize that the doctors who recommended surgery were going on what the pathologists say...so the fault lies in the pathologists, they are the ones who read the slide and make the diagnosis....not the GI doctors or surgeons here....true?
