OMG, I just coughed BLOOD!

What the hell is wrong now? Could it be medicine side effect? What could be the cause? I don't have a sore throat, or a lung infection. I coughed a small chunk of bloody mucous. Great... Another thing to freak out about!

Hello

Could have come down the back of your throat from your nose. Perhaps a small busrt blood vessel in your nose. Have you got a cold?

No cold, or anything. I blew my nose, and there was nothing. If you are a smoker, like I am, you know that occasionally you cough out a thick chunk of mucous directly from your lungs. This felt like that, only it was transparent mucous mixed by a fair quantity of fresh red blood. :(

If you're a smoker, or really anyone, this would be a reason to call your DR first thing Monday morning.

Go see a doctor who can look in your throat. Walk-in clinic if you can't see your primary in a week.

6-7 years ago I threw up blood and freaked out, along with stress unrelated to UC.
Of course it was New Years Eve so had to go to the ER where a doctor looked and said it was nothing and he was right.

I had nothing leading up to it either and am not a smoker.
Of course I was flaring too, bleeding from the other end but it seemed unrelated.
Never had it happen again (and never had it before that time).
I drank fluids and non-abrasive food until my throat felt better.

I am just so TIRED! Two days ago I went for my routine blood works. Yesterday I had a check with my doctor. In four days I have to see a psychiatrist about my growing anxiety and depression, and now I have to check my lungs and throat first thing tomorrow. I am sick of living like this.

I just noticed you are tapering prednisone. That could make you tired as well as anxious, even depressed. Steroid cream can make skin thinner and easy to bleed and bruise. I wonder if it could make your throat susceptible to bleeding easily, skin thinned out.

I don't know... Right now I'm near the end on 5mg of Pred. Sorry for being a downer, but I am just so tired of everything. I feel don't have the strength to do this anymore...

I have had that a lot of times when my nose is very dry and crusty. It can cause bleeding that travels down the back of the throat and if you cough it looks like it came from your chest. I would go get seen. I am sure it's not anything too crazy.

If this is a one-time thing....sounds as though there could be a logical explanation other than something serious....coughed up stuff could be from post nasal drip that settles in around the larynx and in the upper trachea, not necessarily from the lungs.
Any irritation...and that can be from coughing, allergies, dry air, smoking, etc...can cause bleeding if it's irritated enough.

Do you have reflux? If yes, that can cause bleeding if you have erosion....

But....since you are a smoker, you are on prednisone and an immunomodulator, you should get it checked out to make sure.

If the blood was bright red, then it should be easy to spot in the nostrils or beyond, the throat and upper airway by an ENT.

If you have reflux-type discomfort or esophageal spasming symptoms, you might want to get your GI to do an upper scope.

Hi,
With uc it can cause inflamation in other parts of your body.
Depending on how much blood you have when you are coughing up mucos.
When I am in a uc flare I can cough up white mucos which sometimes has blood streaks in it. White mucos is a sign of inflamation in your lungs my dr said if it is yellow or green that is a sign of infection.
If you are coughing up large amounts of blood I would see your dr as soon as you are able. But if it is just small streaks of blood I would mention next time you see the dr..
As others have said maybe from a number of things..
