Pred is making me crazy. Scared.

I feel like I'm losing my mind. Bawling over nothing at WORK and at home. Not wanting to get out of bed. Extremely short-tempered and irritable. Thinking weird bad thoughts that I would normally never think. Have been on pred 5 weeks now.

I was on 40 for 3 weeks, 30 for 2 weeks and I just went down to 20 today. Going to be on 20 for 2 weeks and then 10 for 2 weeks, then off. So I have another month on this. The gastro nurse told me the side effects should lesson as I reduce the dose, but the pharmacist didn't tell me that. I have about a month's worth of xanax left and I've been taking one or two a day, especially to help me fall asleep, but it doesn't help a ton. Not getting good sleep either and that just makes it all worse.

Sorry to complain. This didn't happen to me last time I took pred. :(

That's pred allright. As you taper some side effects get better and some get worse.

What got worse for you? Only side effects I'm getting is the emotional ones and a little bit of circulation in hands/feet (I got that one last time too).

My late father-in-law got all but psychotic on pred. It's a nasty drug.

You can take the whole dose in the morning, which should help you get to sleep better, but it may make your daytime interactions more emotional.

Sorry this is happening to you. It sounds awful.

Yeah, I do take the whole dose in the morning. Thanks. It's okay. It is just strange. I feel like I'm not in control of my emotions/mind and that is weird. Sometimes I'm perfectly fine. It seems to be worse in the evenings.

Many years ago I took clomid for 3 months, trying to get pregnant. At one point a woman I was mentoring at work made me so crazy I stepped into our supervisor's office, closed the door, and launched into a 20 minute rant at what an awful person my mentee was. ugh. At the end, I told the supervisor (a woman, thank goodness) that I was taking clomid and it was making me crazy, and that everything I just said was complete b.s. and she should just forget it (as if she could). I never took that drug again!

LOL!!! I can totally relate. I deleted like 10 of my friends off Facebook last night because they pissed me off. They really were being d*cks though.

It will get better Sara, the more you wean off of pred, the better it will get, I went through an array of emotions like yours when I was on pred, from being in amazing happy moods to the complete opposite, it's the only symptoms I got from it (no moon face or anything else really, just the mood swings).

The emotional side effects should get better as you taper. Don't be suprised though if you start finding you have a different set of side effects pop up as you taper - particularly when you get down to the lower doses.

I'm on 40mg right now, so far so good, haven't been on them very long but was scared to go on them again because I remember the mood swings I got back in 2009, not fun at all! I have yet to notice a moon-face on me, but when that shows up I'm sure everything else will too.

Been off Prednisone for two years next month.
But while on it experienced a myriad of different side effects. Irritability was one of the worst, drove my wife crazy with my mood swings. After a while I learned to sense when a negative mood swing was coming at which time I would remove myself from the situation and calm myself down. Tried to spare her from me going off about absolutely nothing.

Don't know if you had the choice, but I opted for Uceris and it's working great.
Yeah, I almost lost my job and marriage last time I was on it. Also did some crazy dangerous things that almost cost me my life and the lives of others.
I think I became The Hulk.

Pred made me crazy for sure, I was hot and sweaty, didn't sleep, I was irritable and on edge all the time. I also had moonface and loads of hair. It's a horrible drug! Try to remember this is a temporary situation.

I'm back to normal now after a few days on 20 mg. I think what happened was I was on 40 mg for too long. Last year, my GI told me to take it for 2-3 weeks and if I felt better after two weeks, to go down to 30. Well I forgot he told me that last year and I have a new doctor now and I told my doctor that I was on 40 last year for three weeks and that that worked for me, so this year I was on 40 mg for three weeks. I really was scared and felt really out of my mind for a week or two there. I literaly felt like I was going crazy. I feel completely better now!! :) I have yet to get the moonface, knock on wood.

Sara, that happens to me EVERY TIME I'm on pred and I'm so sick of it. I'm planning on never taking pred again. I cannot control my irritability. It even happens when I only take 20 mg.

I am excited to be off it completely in hopefully less than a month. That was really scary. I actually lost some friends earlier this week because I posted something on Facebook (not directed to them even) and pissed them off! I think they're being stupid about it but oh well. lol. So far, no UC symptoms returning, so knock on wood.

Ah, hope things get straightened out regarding your emotions....I can relate, and I'm not on pred! lol.

Sometimes it's good to do some weeding. Gives breathing space....
