prednisone and hyperglycemia (diabetes) help!!!

You need to see your PCP and show him or her the results. Many people have to be on medication for diabetes (most often insulin) while they are taking Prednisone or other steroids. Uncontrolled blood sugar is slowly damaging your organs and likely is causing your shakiness and sweating.

If you can't get into the doc within a couple of days, you may want to go to a quick clinic or even an ER. Your GI won't have a clue what to do about hyperglycemia.

Prednisone can cause a condition called steroid induced diabetes, the literature says that it usually, but not always resolves after removal of the steroid. There is a thread here https://www.healingwell.com/community/default.aspx?f=38&m=3076741

thirst could be due to increased blood sugars. maybe dry mouth too, but more likely that is due to pred itself.

make sure any blood sugar test is fasting (like in morning).

pred side effects can include tremors, anxiety, sleep problems, so docs should not be surprised to hear these symptoms. But, if you need the pred, they may not have much room to respond unless symptom get real severe.

I think symptoms might be worse if you are anxious (besides from the pred). They also often subside after a week or two.

Unless you get lots of lethargy suggesting very high blood sugar, or start to feel psychotic, I don;t think the hospital can help much. a short time of elevated blood sugars, which you can moderate with good glycemic foods, is not super urgent. much depends on you history, weight, activity level, other risk factors ... etc.

worth discussing with GI or primary, at least phone call to nurse - but probably not something you need to go to hospital (usually ER) for.

You might consider having him check your fasting level occasionally. Or, you can purchase a meter for yourself at any pharmacy, no prescription is required.

The reading you had was pretty alarming, and I wouldn't just assume it was in error unless your dad's meter has a history of bad readings.

Don't freak out, but don't ignore it either- pred often causes diabetes. I had it after a long steroid course, but my PCP was the one who figured it out, not my GI. I'd call your PCP & explain what's going on- they most likely will want you to come in. They can give you a blood sugar monitor, & have you check your levels, etc. Usually the steroid induced diabetes will go away once you stop the steroids- but not always, some people have it bad enough to require insulin. I know this is not what you want to hear! But seriously- keep using your Dad's machine, & really track your levels- fasting, after meals, etc. Don't iognore it, if it is from the pred, it will not just go away! Stop talking to your parents about this particular quirk, if need be- call your PCP on your own & set up an appt.

the main test for diabetes is just the fasting blood reading. you do not really need the doc to order a lab blood test for this.

the diagnosis of "steroid induced" and whether or not it is temporary/reversible will have to come later when you are done with pred.

it is good to be concerned about this, but it does sound like your anxiety is too high.

I would just mention the concern when you see the doc.
