Hello,

Anyone who has had these before knows they cause a lot of discomfort and are somewhat demoralizing. My doctor found a few different anal fissures in me a couple of weeks ago. He prescribed me hydrocortisone and gave me cream to put on before bms. The treatment hasn't helped at all, and they presently feel worse than ever (constant burning pain).

I understand having multiple fissures is unusual (I have a few), and though my UC is in remission, I'm wondering what is going on with my body as I'm not sure what caused the fissures. If anyone has any input it would be greatly appreciated. I'm at a loss for what's going on, and didn't know about this condition up until it started.

I've read a few people on this board over the years talking about this, but it may be that they just have not read this thread so I'm bumping it for another chance. I think traffic to the board is particularly light right now due to the long weekend in the States.

I feel your pain! I currently have two painful fissures, although I am also in the midst of a horrible flare. Just when I think they are healing I move the wrong way or wipe too hard and BAM they're bleeding and painful again! It's the worst. My GI gave me some type of ointment that's supposed to stop contractions so they can heal. Not working!!! I'm not sure why we get them....I also thought they were more Chrons related but I've been told multiple times I just have UC..

Vangirl, I really hope you get better soon. And my fissures have gone the same way: it seems like they're improving, and then they become irritated by something and become as bad as ever. I can't even exercise with mine without re-opening them. Man, the colon/anal region is not easy to heal...

I had two at once, all I can say is ouch! My gi wouldn't hive me anything for them. She said I would have to take 3 hot sitz baths a day for 15 minute. I guess the heat helps the area to heal. Mine went away eventually. I didn't do many sitz baths, just waited it out...

I had some along with hemmies. GI gave me cortisone suppositories. He also told me to keep everything going. I was constipated at that time.

I hope you get better soon.

I went to a colorectal surgeon and had my operated on. Don't discount it, it was easy, painless and I'm sooooo glad I did it!!!

My fissure isn't a huge issue....but I do know that if I ignore it continually, it could be.

I know of a young man who is literally debilitated by the anal fissure he has....the pain on his face was heartbreaking.

You could ask your doctor for "rectal rockets"...they're a compounded suppository that will deal with the area that's difficult to reach with a supp and/or ointment.

In Canada, we have Proctocedyl...that's amazing stuff. If you can get an RX for it and order online, maybe that's an option as well.

If all else fails, then surgery is another option as therearemiracles suggested. Good to hear it was successful for her!

I've dealt with fissures and hemmies off and on for 3 years now. I know your pain. I'll tell you what I can, but I'm afraid it's not much. For me, I've fairly convinced my troubles exist because of a lack of adherent mucous layer in, uh, the affected area. Why that is, I don't know. What I do know is that diet modification is the single biggest contributor to them finally healing, and staying mostly healed. I've taken out so many foods, people wonder how I survive. Sometimes I do, too. Anyway, it's the most effective, but also the most time consuming, because you have to keep a detailed food log (absolutely everything that goes into your mouth has to get logged), and you have to be able to wait several days to see results (positive or negative).

The next most effective thing for me was 5HTP. My doctor and I have no idea why this worked, but it did. I take 50mg 5HTP before bed. I sleep better (insane dreams notwithstanding), and my bum feels a lot better. So, I"m not saying this will work for everyone. Just wanted to mention that it worked for me. I think it has something to do with 5HTP -> serotonin, and that your gut is supposed to make tons of it. Mine doesn't, I would say.

Lastly, here's a thread with a post about fissures & healing. Maybe some of the ideas in there will help you to find healing.
