Fever after Colonoscopy

Hi Everyone,   I haven't been here for the looong time. Now it's time for the questions, and I'm here. I had colonoscopy 5 weeks ago. As soon as I got back home from it, my fever went to 103. I called doctor, she gave me to take two antibiotics, don't remember how they called. Does anybody experience anything like that? The next thing, since then, I have diarrhea non-stop. In my case, I have never had it, I only had constipations when in flare. Now I'm confused. I called doctor, she said it's from UC (but, again, my UC is vice versa). Could the symptoms change after a while or it could be something else?

Antibiotics often give people diarrhea. I'd suggest you get some probiotics to replace what the abx killed.

Could the colonoscopy have caused an infection? I agree though that the antibiotics could cause the D. Yet another reason I like to keep the scopes to a minimum. Like it has been said, definitely up the probiotics. Hope you feel better soon.

Ditto what Kaz said. I can't believe what a care free attitude they had regarding your fever after a colonoscopy. They may have perforated your colon and you could have already been dead. Do you still have a fever? The antibiotics can certainly give you diarrhea. That's very common. I believe antibiotics gave me my UC. If you still have a fever they need to take this very seriously.

Which antibiotics did she give you?

Sounds like she didn't know what was happening to you and just screwed you over with antibiotics (like most doctors do these days).

Post-colonoscopy issues really aren't uncommon. People have short term issues like diarrhea, bleeding, etc that go away, but a fever could be a sign that something went wrong during the procedure.

It's one of the reasons that I've stopped getting colonoscopies for the time being. People aren't aware of the risks. People with otherwise normal colons end up developing complications.

Really sounds like your doc dropped the ball, but I'm not surprised. What a joke.

Thank you, guys. Garylouisville, As far as fever, thank God, i had it only for a day. But was surprised, when I called her an hour after colonoscopy, she just sent prescription to the pharmacy. This doctor has a great reputation. I wander now...I do colonoscopy every two years, and never had anything like that.

On the other hand, I was thinking if I had something like mild cold, may be the prosedure triggered it? Could it be? I prefer it better then colon perforation turn

Just wondering if your UC is in remission and if you are taking Any UC prescriptions or alternative things. This will also give us more background.

I take 8 Colazal and 2 Lialda daily.

I have proctitis and most of time I have mild flare, which not really bothers me. Sometimes, I use cortifoam if symptomes get worth.

Currentrly, I've been using cortifoam for three weeks already with no improving. And that's why I assuming it's not UC, since it gets better in two-three days after cortifoam.

If you developed c. diff from the antibiotics, then I'm afraid cortifoam won't do much. Did you get tested for that recently?

Okay, good to know. If it is cdiff than of course cortifoam won't help. If it isn't, what about trying Rowasa at night?

I would definitely go back to the doctor ASAP and have them test you for CDiff. Antibiotics can cause this.

I would say your symptoms could possibly change to diarrhea with UC, but it seems strange to me that it would change all of a sudden. If the diarrhea was just from the antibiotics, it seems like it would get better after being off of them for a couple of weeks...

Guys, thank you very much for scarring me with c. Diff. I went to different doctor, and he did the stool test. Guess what?! C. Diff it is....will start antibiotics tomorrow. I just don't understand why my prior doctor, who i've been seeing for years, didn't even want to see me with given circumstances. And i would think its just colitis.... Brrrrrr, shocked

I'm so glad you got a proper diagnosis!! Wow, I would be very upset with my doc if I were you. They are human and sometimes get it wrong, but they should have listened to you and run some tests.

Wow... I'm glad you pressed and found out about this...

+1 for being your own advocate
- 1 for so-called "qualified" doctors (again).

You should probably stick with this new guy. At least he has some idea of what he's doing. Unlike your last doc, I certainly do *hope* he's aware that antibiotics cause c. diff.
