My brother coined this term among our family: The magneto effect, named after the electrical device he was familiar with even though it had not else to do with it. Anyway, the theory is that if you are out and about, the closer you get to home the more urgently you have to go to the bathroom.

I feel this rather acutely. I am currently in a flare and going as many as 20 or more times a day. It can seem like even 5 minutes after leaving the bathroom I can start developing the urge to go again, however if I am able to slip out of the house in the brief moments that I am not having an urge, I can be okay for a couple of hours. But almost as soon as I get home the bathroom calls.

Anyone experience the phenomenon of having to go more when you are near a friendly bathroom?

I think most of us can empathize with this to some extant. It could be psychological.

Yep. When I was flaring badly (up to 20 BMs a day), I really didn't have problems when I was out and about. I did go a lot at work, but it was a "familiar" bathroom and I was there for 8+ hours a day.

Mine is the opposite. I feel much better when I am near a friendly bathroom. Once I am away from the friendly bathroom, that's when the anxiety kicks in and my guts start churning.

Uh, yes, that happens to me a lot. I was out all day today and luckily, no crazy bathroom drama. When I was home yesterday, it was nonstop. I am not Ina terrible flare up so it's very unpredictable. One day good, the next bad. I think I was lucky today. When I am flaring badly nothing keeps me from having to go.

I love coining terms with this disease!!

Like the disasterous Double, Triple, or even Quadruple.
You sit and go and get it all out and sometimes it hits as you get back into bed... sometimes as you're leaving the bathroom... or worst: while ur washing your hands! and BAM!!!! you gotta go again!

I think I had 5 once... but i forget what thats called cuz i just got my IV pain meds weeeeee!


PS: ive crap in my pants in my driveway wayyy too many times for the Magneto Effect not to be real.

Ya I get this all the time; but its not just restricted to the home. Whenever I need to go to the washroom, the closer I get to it, the greater the urgency. Its totally psychological, but its a real pain in the ass (I never can get away from that pun; sorry)

Ugh, mine is opposite. Do I have the anti magneto effect?? If I'm far from a bathroom I have to go NOW!!!! Once I know there's a bathroom close by...the urge fades about 50% of the time. I gave up about being choosy about my bathrooms long ago. Any accessible bathroom in my time of need is a friendly bathroom to me tongue

Or call it the WalMart effect which was discussed a couple weeks ago. Something about walking through a WalMart does it for me and others.

I have the Wegmans effect. They have the nicest bathrooms. Always spotless. My butt sends a signal to my brain everytime I'm shopping there.

Don't forget about Home Depot. It happens there quite often also.
