Presnisone vs prednisolone

Why are we prescribed prednisone more than prednisolone? As far as I understand prednisone is converted to prednisolone in the liver, wouldnt it make more sense just to prescribe prednisolone? Im just wondering since prednisone doesnt do much for me, maybe prednisolone would work better?

Bumping this. Im thinking of calling my doctor today and ask to switch but hoping to get a bit more info first.

I think they are close to the same but from what I understand prednosilone has a little more bang for the buck vs prednisone. 10 mgs of one is not the same as 10 mgs for the other one. It seems like in the US they prescribe prednisone more than the other and do it opposite in many other countries.

All I can glean from google is that prednisone is converted to prednisolone in the liver, and in patients with liver problems, prednisolone is preferred. Also, prednisone is a corticosteroid and prednisolone is a steroid, not sure what the difference is. Can't really figure out why prednisone is preferred, other than one site saying it's just been around longer. Prednisone is used more often in Canada too.

actually both are corticosteroids. chemically they are NOT the same. prednisone is precursor form. prednisolone is slightly stronger, but not significantly so.

I think it has to do with timing of bioavailability. maybe it is problematic that prednisoline would start acting topically in upper gi tract. prednisone is not bioavailable until in blood and gets to liver.
