Is there any way to prevent C Diff?

I heard "Cefuroxime axetil" can induce C Diff? Which scares the living day lights out of me.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Drinking kefir seems to help. It provides a constance source of "good" bacteria thereby maintaining the proper balance in your GI tract. Also become a chronic hand-washer, that way you'll decrease your chances of picking it up in the first place.

There are three main things you can do:

1. stay away from antibiotics as much as possible

2. take high dose probiotics with 50 billion CFU's or more, doubling or tripling that when on antibiotics (this can include foods delivering similar amounts)

3. take as few acid reducers as possible such as anything from rolaids up to the big prescription type guns. Antacid medications are linked to an increased risk of C-Diff

I completely agree. One probiotic in particular is especially effective against C Diff and that is Saccharomyces Boulardii. Not only does it go after C Diff but since it isn't a bacteria but a probiotic yeast that means that it is immune from antibiotics.

making kefir, yogurt, and fermented veggies isn't very expensive. i've saved a lot using those as my probiotics instead of buying probiotic supplements.

I see the stuff on Amazon for 25 cents a capsule. What cost are you talking about?

Lots of people with UC do not get c-diff. Why do you think you are at particular risk?

As of right now, I only have 11 dollars, and no credit/debit card. ^^;

Last month I was on amoxicillin, which did a number on me. There's no way my gut flora is at hundred percent. Not to be gross or anything, but my last bowel movement was rather soft...

even drugstore brand probiotics cost more than $11.

I do think that high/larger doses of probiotics are good after courses of antibiotics. start with some yogurt and/or probiotic drink, and get more concentrated probiotics as soon as you have some money.

I talked to my mom about my concerns. She said, she will buy me Florastor, and probiotic rich foods/drinks.

Sky Kitty, how long have you had Ulcerative Colitis or Crohn's Disease?
In addition to pro-biotics and such Also effectively managing your stress levels and your state of mind and avoiding IBS related diarrhea can help prevent getting c. diff too. Flares of IBD and recurrent outbreaks of c. diff have been known to be triggered by anxiety and depression. That is because anything that disturbs the balance of guy bacteria can potentially make you more vulnerable to problematic bacteria.

That's right, I never had/have any of the above.

I am a anxiety/depression/ sufferer.

Does anyone know, if Florastor can do anything weird?

And how long should probiotics be taken after antibiotics?
