Gas & UC

Hey Guys,

I changed my screen name, it was newucer but not really that new anymore.

Anyways I was looking for some tips with gas. I work in retail and during the day I'm in constant discomfort because of it. I'm not completely in remission, I still have 2-4 bm's a day with blood like every 4th or 5th day and then nothing. But not being able to expel the gas because I'm working with people is super uncomfortable.

I tried VSL 3 for a while and that didn't help.(2-3 weeks) My diet is far from perfect and I know certain things cause gas and I try and stay away from those things. Was wondering if you guys have the same problem? I mentioned it to my GI and he just kind of looks at me like "If that's your biggest problem right now, then it's not that bad." And he's right in a way but it is still uncomfortable during the day when I can't fart!

Is there anything you all take or do to get rid of gas?

Dairy and fruit or anything with a lot of sugar used to cause big gas in my gut.
For some people it's sulfur in food that causes problems (such as eggs).
It took a long time for my gut to correct through diet modification (much bigger flare that yours sounds like) but now I can have almost all forms of dairy with normal gas (not much). Fruit however stays out because it causes IBS for me along with gas. Way back I tried Gas-X and it did nothing, the problem was waaay beyond it's ability lol.

I'm not sure a probiotic would help or hurt your gas because they are all different and the wrong one could cause more gas unless you had the time to test them out.

Perhaps remove liquid-type dairy (milk/ice cream) and cut down on sugary food for 2 weeks and see if you have less gas.

While gas is normal while increasing flare or healing from one...much can do with what you are eating in the morning/lunch.

So, since you are on meds, improving...that's HUGE (plus being able to fart without any sharting), but what are you eating during the day?

VSL or many probiotics can cause gas during the day...might consider another probiotic and take it at bedtime.

It should go away in time. In the mean time, everybody farts, you just need to be craftier than the average person in order to get away with it. You need to become a fart ninja at your job. Either that or become an expert fart denier (inspired by the Simpsons): modernfartdenier.com/homer.png

LOL...aaahhhh the haunting of the farts! I know it could be a lot worse but so annoying! I'm honing my skills in the ways of the fart ninja! LOL....

Freddyj, your right it probably is something I eat. I've got down to like 4 foods on the elimination diet and just couldn't do it. I guess things didn't get quite bad enough for me to get down to 1 or 2 foods. I'm super athletic and have a hard time keeping weight on and during the process of trying to eliminate I was rapidly losing weight. I drink a protein shake in the morning but have experimented over the past couple years with a bunch of different proteins and am on a good one now that doesn't cause bloating or gas..I don't drink any soda or drinks with sugar, and I don't like sweets. Bread is a culprit also.

How to recognize a healing fart from non healing?

Gas X (actually, the Target store brand version of it) taken 3-4 times a day works for me. My GI said its fine to take that much. It's safe enough to use during pregnancy.

I usually take it 15-30 minutes after I finish a meal.

Also, I found that once I started eating resistant starch, the noxious smell of my gas (and BMs) went away. Now they smell like everyone else's. It happened within a day or two of me starting the starch so I know it was what helped.

I eat 4-5 tablespoons per day of Bob's Red Mill unrefined potato starch mixed with applesauce and cinnamon. I eat the whole daily "dose" at one time.
