Hydrocortisone Enemas & Prednisone At The Same Time

Quick Question,

Have any of you used hydrocortisone enemas at the same time as being on Prednisone? I have both and was thinking about using both?

Hmmm...

Pred is very systemic, so it should reach all areas of the body. Personally, I think it would be a little redundant to use both. If the inflammation is limited to the distal area, then perhaps using hydrocortisone is a better idea. I would do that than deal with the side-effects of prednisone.

I've always used both at the same time for a bad flare. If my flare is more then just my rectum, I use predisone. However if just the rectum and sigmoid, my GI tries to treat it with just the Hydro enema.

Hi, I had to get a colostomy bag due to my colon completely rotting out during my pregnancy. I'm up for reversal surgery but can't see
To get rid of this pesky rectum inflammation. My doctors suggested hydrocortisone enemas first and I seen results the more diligent I became but then the sodium butyrate enemas were suggested. I was supposed to be on it since mid July. But couldn't afford until the 1st of this month. And I'm panicking because the blood has come back along with the urgency is this normal in the beginning stages of using this med or should I be using the hydrocortisone as well?

When I was on pred, my GI told me to continue to use my hydrocortisone enemas too. He put me on the enemas only first but they didn't do anything - I think I was just in too bad of a flare and I just kept getting worse. But when he put me on pred, he said to continue the enemas for about 4 weeks (if I remember correctly!) as he said there's been studies to show that they work best together.

I didn't need enemas when I was on a high dose of pred but when I tapered down, I was using rectals. I think it was mostly cortifoam and I am not sure whether it was helpful - I had an extremely difficult time getting off of pred regardless.

It's ok to use both at the same time-esp if you have rectal urgency and involvement. Not as much steroid gets into your system from the enemas and the treatment is effective right in the area you need help with.
