I am having a colonoscopy in 10 days and freaking myself out especially since big brother recently had a bowel resection for colon cancer..and he has never had the proctitis that mum used to have and I get. My last colonoscopy was negative 9 years ago.

This one has been ordered as I have infrequent bleeding and frequent abdominal discomfort.

I have made 3 mistakes over the last 3 months..all concerned with pizza. All from different sources.

Pain in the rectum/lower bowel 8 hours later like I'm being cut inside then blood along with stools then the runs..

This particular strong gutting pain only happens with pizza.

 I can think of no reason why this would happen as all 3 had different textures however I certainly got a bad reaction....Never again!

Any idea why Pizza would affect me in such a savage way?

Has anyone else had this reaction?

maybe it is an ingredient in the pizza that your gut doesn't like. I haven't had pizza for probably 10 months now because I know I can't handle the gluten (in the pizza dough) or lactose (in the cheese). Nor do I want to eat the processed salami.

What's in common with all 3 pizzas?

I wouldn't say it would cause you any UC problems, however...what else did you have with the pizza?

The only problem I'd have with pizza would be some gas depending on what's on it...such as too much garlic or fat or wnole grain crust.

It could cause you more discomfort and exacerbate your already inflamed rectum.

pizza was always an issue for us before surgery. i always assumed that it had something to do with the acidic tomato sauce and or the bread.

Pizza is loaded with mozzarella cheese, which is relatively high in lactose (for cheese). I couldn't eat pizza for a long time without taking a lactase pill (or 3) before a pizza meal.

Pizza sometimes has nasty effects on me also. We don't have it often because of this which ticks me off cuz I love pizza.

If it had sausage or pepperoni on it, maybe that's what's doing it. I can't eat either one b/c they both have MSG.

Interestingly, I can generally eat pizza fine - except from this one restaurant (which is really famous for its exceptional pizza.) When we have it from there, I generally have loose, multiple stools the next day, and sometimes (if things are fragile) a little blood.
So.....in this case, it must be some specific ingredient. You don't mention if your pizza came from the same place or different....

I could never eat pizza when I had UC...used to kill me. It was only until after surgery that I can finally enjoy it again. Cheese and anything dairy is hard on UC. Tomato sauce isn't much better.

Sorry the pizza causes you problems. I know for me I haven't been able to eat red meat for 26-years. I had serious C-Diff, which turned into Psuedomembraneous colitis & ever since then eating red meat will give me signs like I have colitis all over again. I grew up meat & potatoes, however, I got used to not eating the red meat especially when eating it caused severe pain & problems. I adjusted to chicken, turkey, fish quite easily. I don't even have a desire for red meat at all.

For me it would be the bread, and also the tomato sauce. Pizza Hut was always one of the things I knew I could not eat, while others were not as bad. Cheese doesn't bother me...so everyone is different!
Just pay attention to what bothers you and be smart about it, because probably no one can tell you what or why.

i agree with Max: the commonality is gluten, wheat, cheese - all big no-nos :(

I found the wrapping....

Base..Wheat flour, water, yeast, canola oil, salt, calcium acetate, improving agent 2973,920

Sauce...Tomato paste, water

Topping...ham 15% pork, water, salt, starch, meat protein, sugar stabilizers 451405, antioxidant 3161, acidity regulator 331, flavor enhancer 621, spices, sodium nitrate 251, onion, smoked bacon, pepperoni salami, hydrolysed vegetable protein, acidity regulator 330, cheese,  potato starch, capsicum, processed meat, wheat binder soy protein, mineral salt, preservative 250

    I thought it was just me but pizza bothers me also.  I never could understand why pizza upset my stomach.  I'm thinking it has to do with the tomato sauce.  Pizza and spicy foods are a no no for me.

Pizza sometimes bothers me. If I have the pizza on a whole wheat crust and very little cheese, I'm ok. Tomato sauce never bothers me at all.

I quit trying to find a common denominator on why certain foods caused gut problems. Much simpler to just remove the food and feel good. Of course your brain and taste buds will want to tempt you and make you forget what happened the last time and you will eat it again. It takes repeated punishment to finally get the message "Don't eat that or else…

I don't eat pizza or wheat products or tomato products any more. That's me, YMMV.

Pizza can be high in histamines. Many UC'rs are low on the digestive enzyme DAO, which breaks down dietary histamines. Many of the things in pizza are high in histamines. This histamine overdose can make your UC much, much worse. I know that this was my problem when eating pizza because now I take the digestive enzyme DAO before meals and now I can eat pizza with absolutlely no problem. It could also be some of the other things mentioned but I'm really glad histamine was my problem because now I can eat it.

I can eat pizza from a small restaurant that makes it fresh on site.
I also take a digestive enzyme pill called. DOA .

Plain cheese pizza agrees with me .

Mmmm, pizza... home made pizza doesn't have an ill effect on me at all. Actually neither does take out from like Domino's or panago... I don't eat it often at all though.

I'm ok eating Pizza with a barbecue base. Just make sure it has no Ham or any thing spicy on the top

Pizza doesn't even bother me when flaring. Plain homemade double cheese pizza is a major constipator. The restaurant stuff is often full of added fat and covered with greasy toppings which I do not like when flaring. If you have a gluten problem or lactase deficiency, don't eat it.

Tonight I had Papa Johns new pulled pork barbeque pizza. Took 4 DAO. Has anyone else eaten this pizza? Whoa. Fire extinguisher material. Had no idea. The insides of my mouth were burned off. No UC troubles.

Yummm pizza...I usually go to this little place that's been around forever. Thin crust, dough made fresh. After UC it definitely started bothering me, So sad! But I think I've narrowed it down to the pepperoni and cheese. The pepperoni is just too great I mean greasy, and even before UC I'd pull excess cheese off. I can handle only very small amounts of dairy, I think. No more Dairy Queen Blizzards...
