I am just curios how many of us with UC is livingup with this.

I wa just diagnosed this month.

You're not alone Arbee_DC, I was diagnosed in May after my long smoldering colitis suddenly took over my life.

Generally we can have a normal life span however complications due to surgery or toxic megacolon can always happen and of course cancer. After 10 years of disease we need to go to a yearly scope for cancer screening. At least that's what I've been told.

I'm well aware of that, but complications aren't something you can 'compute'. He was relieved that some of you were still alive after a decade! By the way the OP phrased the comment, it sounded like he was seeing how long people have managed to stay alive with UC, and as you've said yourself, we have the same average life span as normal people. Risks and complications are something different. It would be like saying to a pilot that they're not going to live as long as most people because there's a slight chance the plane may crash. Everybody has risks in their lives, and UC is ours. Death is not something we need to be constantly worried about.

Thanks andrina , malaika was able to get my point.

I am also aware of the complications and i am happy that most of you guys dont have any given you already have this for a decade.

I am just trying to look at the brightside here and i found it with some of the answer of some member livibg with UC for a long time.

I think am on depression right now thats why i am asking this type of questions..

Its really hard that everytime i poop i am worried that there will be blood with it fortunately for days now there are no bloods and i poop only onxe a day.

Diagnosed September 2011. I probably always had IBS that gradually developed into UC after taking naproxen sodium (Aleve) for headache relief.

May 1992 - I'm a 22 year UC veteran.

I've never really had complications from UC aside from having a hard time controlling my flares. Most of my issues are extra-intestinal manifestations of having an IBD - dry eye syndrome, peripheral arthritis and ovarian cysts.

I've had UC since November of 2008, diagnosed in January 2009. I wouldn't say that I've "suffered" with it, though - luckily, my case has been really easy to control. I've only had one very minor flare since the bad flare I had when my UC first started.

Lost weight, gained weight, lost hope, gained hope, dry eyes, bruised thighs (humira inj.), lots of poop, lubed butt with goop.

diagnosed 25+ years ago...symptomatic for almost 3 years before that. I lost lots of weight in the years before diagnosis. Once on medication and eating enough, the weight started to increase over the years.

Yes, there are complications from UC and extraintestinal disorders and medications that can put us in serious condition, but so far that hasn't been an issue with me.

Dry eyes aren't necessarily related to having UC...but could be related to virus, infection, autoimmune, meds, genetics, allergies, etc. I've had them for a long time, plus crinkly conjunctiva, but not connected to UC or autoimmune...so the specialists say.....:-b whatever....try to meet the needs of your eyes by proper drops, hygiene, environment, etc. Do the best you can without extending the inflammation to get worse. Maintenance is a good thing. Not all drops react the same for everyone.

My son will look in my eye every once in awhile and ask if it's bleeding. Thank God I wear glasses now. Hides that a little bit. Anyone found any particular drops that help?

I use OTC allergy eye drops - currently the Walmart version of Zaditor and Alaway in the past. I just switched b/c the generic Zaditor was a lot cheaper than Alaway. Anyway, I don't have UC-related eye problems, but I do get very swollen/itchy/sometimes red eyes due to allergies. The drops help a lot. I don't know if they'd help you, though, Dr-A.

I use a combo of bausch & Lomb Redness (1 drop in each eye morning and night) and Systane Balance whenever they're irritated,

I was using opticrom for a while..omg,.my eyes got much worse. But, for some it might work if seasonal allergy related.

I also have a touch of blepharitis...warm cloths help that.

On occasion I've had maybe slight infection. Polysporin used to have drops, but they're impossible to find now. sheesh....just a drop helped a lot...sigh. so the soon to be expired bottle I have hopefully will be OK for the next year.

I also have Tears Natural PM gel lubricant. Works well and I've used them on occasion during the day.

Seen several different eye docs and they told me nothing was wrong and was most likely part of the UC. Never really had the issue until mid late 2000's. Pretty much a daily thing. Think last drop i tried was restasis but never noticed decrease in redness. I'll give one of these others a shot.
