Friend W/UC Getting Colectomy

So, my dad and I know this guy who does odd jobs for us now and then. He's great at yard work and other general things. We've gotten to the point that we stop over at his house to chat if we see him outside or around town.

Anyways, I found out within the last year that he had UC. It sounded like it was all taken care of by 5-ASA's, which was great. However, my dad saw him last weekend, and he said they found cancer in his colon and he had to have it cut out on Monday. So, he was out having a really good meal during the weekend before he had to go in and take care of it all.

It's just amazing that other people just matter of the fact get surgery and move on, and others of us avoid it like the plague. Granted, if there is cancer there you have gotta get it gone. Still, my dad said our friend didn't seem too worried about it... just seemed to be taking it in stride.

Hey T-If I get to the point that surgery is needed, I'm sure I will seem very calm and collected when discussing it with other people. My wife is the only person that really knows the depth of my suffering and the emotional toll that UC has given me. To everyone else that knows about it, I never let them think it is anything that I can't handle. I wonder if your friend is doing the same.

Same. Everyone thinks I take UC in my stride, and very few people realise how much it scares me.

Everyone is different; no two people will respond the same with with surgery for UC. For some it comes easy, for others the mere idea sends them in a panic. By the time I relented to surgery I took it in stride also and focused on an improved life post surgery.

I'm 5 months out from surgery now and I could honestly say I have never once looked back. It feels like I never even had Colitis to begin with, wheras when I did it was ALL I could ever think about. My fiance and parents pushed me to have the surgery and I'm glad they did. I had a pretty horrible experience as far as complications and infections, but I would do it again in a heart beat. I was that 5% of people who they say something will happen to, except I was that 5% for about %75 of the posssible complications, but again. Faced with the same situation i'd go it again.

Much like everyone else, I lived a nightmare with Colitis. I'm glad I was put intpo my position as young as I am (28) so that I wasn't dealing with that for the rest of my life, or until I was 40 or so and needed surgery at that point anyways.

Somewhere around 50... give or take a few years.
