I started on 14 and it was a miracle for about 5 weeks then got much worse...had to do prednisone then when came off that much worse again. Now I am on 21 mg and also using Rowasa almost nightly and that seems to be working fairly well (still on asacol HD and Imuran)

My insurance no longer covers the patches as this is not approved for UC.

All you e-cig users: is it possible to just get liquid nicotine w/o flavor or additives, and does it come with dosage such as x mg/ml ????

Thanks for the updates everyone. I don't think I can start nicotine patches now since I'm still breastfeeding. But I'm going to try them soon - my gastro keeps hassling me to try AZA one last time, even though I ended up in hospital with a toxic liver last time. I really don't want to go there and since I'm *almost* able to maintain remission with mesalazine alone, I think nicotine might be enough to keep me well.

I'm in the UK so I'm hoping that I can get the nicotine patches free. The NHS guidance for healthcare professionals says: "The use of nicotine replacement therapy for the treatment of ulcerative colitis is off-label, and as such should only be prescribed following appropriate clinical governance procedures." If my gastro says no then I think I'll switch hospitals because I don't really get on with him.

ok...thanks for link. I wouldn't smoke them, but would use in enemas at the dosage in the article.

I've been using the nicotine patches for about 6 weeks now and have noticed a big difference in symptoms.  I can't leave them on at night because they do disturb my sleep.  I do have a lot of problem with skin irritation that doesn't go away when I remove the patches - but that's a small price to pay.  I've started using Cortaid on my skin after I remove the patch to try and alleviate the itch.  I have noticed some difference now that I'm using the store brand instead of the Nicoderm patches.  I'm going to switch back and see if it's all in my head or not.  I'm currently using the 14 mg. patches.  My GI says go with it as long as it's helping and keep the dose where it's at so that I can move up if necessary.

Has anyone noticed that they get a nasty cough or any other side effect (other than insomnia and nausea) when using the patch?

I've been on the patch for 6 -7 weeks now (10mg) and had a viral infection about 3 - 4 weeks ago (basically sneezing a lot). The sneezing has disappeared, along with all other symptoms, except for the itchy cough. It hasn't gotten any better. Its hard for me to talk sometimes and sleep.

I am wondering if it is the nicotine from the patch that is causing the cough to persist? But if that were the case, why did all the other symptoms improve, just not the cough? If the nicotine is subduing my immune system, which is in turn, allowing the cough to continue, wouldn't the whole viral infection persist?

Man, just last two weeks had horrible time trying to find a spot with no reactions. Just all of a sudden my body doesn't like them anymore. Itchy rash 12 hours in. Lasting over week. I showed my wife the last 8 places I put them on my body by the big red circles, lol.

My update on nicotine- it has been 3 months on 21 mg and I am still feeling great. No cough or other ill effects, except patch rash (using generic Mal-Wart brand which is identical to Walgreens brand)
Have found Super Salve to be helpful with that. I do leave the patches on for 24 hours to absorb all that nicotine goodness I can get. Seems to really be helping and after terrible last flare I am glad it is. Insurance wont pay for it though.....don't use the CVS brand as the patches just don't stick at all (my experience.)

I have found a safe spot for the moment. Bottoms of my feet work great and no reactions there yet.

Well for me Nicotine has definitely worked.
I had UC when I was 11, then went into remission with 13-14 without any medication, but started smoking.

Never had any symptoms of even having UC for 17 years. When I stopped smoking 4 years ago the UC came back. Of course as an ex smoker I am trying to avoid patches as I was super addicted and really struggled to quit smoking.
But I can recommend Nicotine to anybody!!

It's been four years since I've been here; mostly because I've been in remission for that time. I am still taking 6 Grams per day of balsalizide and 1 gram of turmeric, but I mostly attribute it to lots of nicotine lozenges. I take the balsalizide and turmeric because I subscribe to the philosophy of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" and it ain't broke.
