Hi guys. I've posted before. But since July been in a very mild flair. Minimal bleeding, some urgency. No D. Tried rectal meds including hydrocortisone enemas and suppositories. Not sure what to do now. Tried each one for about a month. I feel as if I didn't give myself enough time trying them. Maybe I needed two months on cortifoam ( for example). Should I start cortifoam again? Maybe do tht in morning, Canasa in afternoon, and hydrocortisone enema at night? Dr said get off steroids stick with Canasa, excersize, and see nutritionist. Which I'm doing tomorrow. And just signed up for gym last week. I'm convinced diet will play a role in helping me recover faster. Is it worth it to do the scd? It's so hard to commit to! Also I started taking two vsl 3 each day. Any suggestions/ideas would be greatly appreciated. I know it's all trial and error with this

Personally I don't think nutrionists have the right mindset to acually treat the disease. They know nutrition. They can give you advice on how you might be able to better get proper nutrition due to your disease but have no clue on what foods are good and not good for your particular case of UC. For example, if they think vitamin C might be good for you they may suggest increasing citrus fruits or making smoothies or juicing them, not knowing that your guts hate citrus and that that will actually make you much worse. SCD works in some and not others. As you said, it is trial and error.

And what do you think about the idea of doing cortifoam i morning Canasa in afternoon and hydrocortisone in evening? I want to get it right already. Trying to be positive. Because I know thinking about it all day will not allow me to get better.

Can you get mesalamine enemas? I find them much better than suppositories which do very little to help a flare in my opinion, supps are only useful for maintenance. You should not use hydrocortisone for a long period, it will cause thinning of tissue.

My suggestions for diet may not work for you but try reducing the amount of fiber you eat. If you aren't having D or gas then dairy is probably not a problem. Urgency could be helped by the mesal. enemas but you'll have to notice if urgency seems connected to food or drink.

Diet modification is not quickly figured out but the biggies seem to be: fiber (too irritating), dairy (causing gas or urgency or D), gluten (intolerance not celiac) and there are more. Along with those my gut also does not like fruit, fruit juices, tomatoes, caffeine, chocolate and more. Your gut will be different.

If you remove foods and still have symptoms then food isn't your problem. Good luck.

My personal experience, yes the SCD diet is worth it.

Is it easy? No.

Is it easy dealing with this disease? No.

If you decide to do the diet, will you cheat? More than likely.

Will you make a mistake? You bet.

Will you find that somethings in the diet don't work for you? Yes!

It takes time and a lot of will power to do it (probably less time then you spend on the toilet). I was tired of enemas and going back on Imuran. This pulled me out of a flare while only taking Lialda.

I suggest doing a food diary in Excel with your bowel movements, food, general health that day. I would also do the stages on Pecanbread (mainly the start). The dying off at the beginning is no fun and it will truly test you. Just keep your head up at the end result. It took me just shy of 2 months before I was feeling really good (all this depends on how bad you are...).

Thanks for the advice. So even though there is minimal bleeding you recommend mesalalamine enemas? Like rowasa? As opposed to Canasa suppositories?

Thanks Blandnuts. Personally I also had enough of All these medications and would much rather fix this flare on my own. I'm in the process of making the chicken soup now. My third time trying this diet. Hope I make it past a week.

Go look up FODMAPS and within 4 weeks you can be certain what is hard for you to digest. Ask your nutritionist, they should know sbout it. Good luck

For some reason I don't have exactly what I ate, I think I would of gone mad sitting in front of the computer.... I know the carrots and honey tripped me up at the beginning. I felt more normal once I brought in eggs, avocados, and spinach. Spinach took a few times before I was fine with it. I had a drastic improvement once I introduced GI prohealth probiotics (SCD legal). Yogurt makers and Crock pots are your friend!

It seems you have not gotten results with the rectal meds you've used so give Rowasa enema a try (I use generic version). Beyond helping bleeding it reduces inflammation in an area that sends signals to the colon and could be the reason for your flare. Like putting out a smoldering fire. There's no reason for you not to try Rowasa, at least you'll know if it helps or not.

7 nights use will tell you if it's helping or not.

Ok I just had it ordered into the pharmacy. You use one a night? Was thinking id do Canasa in the morn and rowasa at night

I would try and find a compatible vitamin and probiotic. I don't think it would be the end of the world to use what you have, but it's not SCD legal. The po po might come after you!

FYI, I had great results with Rowasa too. It wouldn't hurt to try that (too).

Your GI is weird. You are still flaring and all he tells you is to stick to the enemas which haven't been working? Is he even interested in making you feel better? I would go up the meds ladder and see if maybe Imuran is worth a shot. Exercise and diet? It won't help a lot. Sure if you're better on SCD stick with it. Otherwise you'll need stronger meds. Just my two cents.

It's just killing me that it's taking so long to treat such a small amount of inflammation. It's not even two inches. But thanks for all your advise guys. I'll be starting scd and rowasa tomorrow.
