uBiome, anyone interested?

Hello folks,

There is a group on facebook that is going to get a bulk discount of 30-40% from uBiome. I wonder if anybody here is interested.

Has anyone here did uBiome? Is it worth spending money? The sample report shows Genus of organisms but when I asked about species classification, I didn't get any answer.

I sent in my uBiome sample in November but haven't heard anything yet. I was thinking of doing an American gut project sample for my whole family but I will look into the bulk UBiome as well.

Yup. Not sure why it's taking so long. I inquired a few weeks ago and was told they just did their first sequencing run. Can you post the facebook info on the discount? Is it specifically targeted at IBD people? I have suggested to them that they do a comparison of this group to "normal" as other studies indicate that this is indeed the case: the microbiome of IBD individuals differs from normal and that UC vs Crohns can be distinguished by the microbial population.

they seemed to loose my sample, than found it, still no results.

I don't know how specific it will get about species. There is a survey that asks about chronic illness,medications, and diet - but many things (like medications) was entered freeform, and I am not sure how easily that will get into the database to permit correlations of mirobe profiles with IBD/medication/diet

I gave my American Gut sample I think last January (2013) and it must have been at least six months before I got my results.

I know this is an old post but I used the Xmas discount code for uBiome. It was supposed to expired on the 10th but someone said it is still valid.

So this study will tell you what kind of gut bacteria you have?

Can this lead me to take some action with getting rid of certain bacteria or adding certain others?

I did American Gut. It was extremely helpful to me and I was able to use the info to make myself much better. I don't think that's the case with the average Joe or Jane though. I had to do a lot of investigating on my own in order to use the info to my advantage. It isn't just handed to you. You have to be your own researcher. It can often make college look like Sesame Street. There have been a number of times when my brain suffered overload and tripped the circuit breaker.

do you think uBiome is worth spending $89 plus shipment? Does the info about your gut bacteria help you with anything, i mean choosing the right antibiotic etc?

I'd look at some of the example reports. It gives you the bacteria's family but not individual strains (as in the case of probiotics).

It's generally assumed that we as IBD patients have messed up gut bacteria. If it's not a cause then it's certainly a symptom of IBD. One user took grape seed extract after a first ubiome test and got his ubiome data again afterwards and it improved things.

i would think ewa girl, that any tool available that can help treat UC on a more individual basis, as opposed to the typical shot in the dark treatments, would be extremely valuable -

i would even be willing to refund your 89 bucks + shipping if you are not completely satisfied - seriously !

i believe strongly in doing for ourselves, especially when standard medical treatments are not doing the job -

thanks so much for the advice stud :) so you've finally tipped the scales in favor of my doing it - uBiome should send you the commission lol. btw in what way do u think it helped u to apply any particular treatment? Did u adjust any targeted antibiotics?

hey ew - i will be doing the ubiome thing with you for the first time - we'll be pen/poop pals for life -

i'm still doing just fine, but like every UC'er that's doing well, i'm always thinking about the day when things go berserk again - so the ubiome thing will hopefully give me a future plan if i do in fact need it - and hopefully one that will not include prescription drugs -

great to hear that !:) I've just received the parcel with pc medicus so i'm planning to go for uBiome as soon as i have finished all the sachets. I'll be curious to know your results first :)

There is no magic wand that will give you uBiome info quickly. Unless you want to spend significant time googling and reading, I suggest don't bother with it.

That said, I have been using extensively and it has helped me to an extent.
