I have Ulcerative Colitis and I keep lots of Simethicone on hand to use it with each meal. I also use Beano, both regular Beano and Beano + Dairy Defense. I feel that anything that helps me digest food better can only make life easier on my colon. I carry these meds in my purse. I find that they have reduced my abdominal pains. My internist said he was not concerned about the quantity of these meds I was using and he did not think they would harm me. GI Dr. agreed.
I switched from GasX to Phazyme, or generic Simethicone, after I developed esophageal pain. My doctor told me mint could irritate my esophagus. I had been drinking green tea with mint each day and taking GasX, which has peppermint oil.
I found it strange that peppermint oil is supposed to be soothing to the intestines, but can be an irritant to the esophagus. However, since I cut out mint and added Prevacid, my esophagus has felt better most of the time. I am quite underweight due to UC, so I am not a typical candidate for GERD.
