Fatigue, tiredness with Ulcerative Proctitis

Hi, im new to this forum but have had ulcerative Proctitis for nearly a year.Currently trying a food combining diet but have lost a lot of weight. Now slightly underweight currently waiting to see dietician. Also feeling tired most of the time and sometimes get dizzy or blood rushing to head if I stand up quickly. Guessed B12 deficient so tried B12 oral spray & B complex vits which seemed to help slightly. Bloods just came back normal but with B12 & folate higher than normal. Have I skewed the test by taking the suppliments? Or could fatigue be caused by something else? Have read about magnesium deficiency and how blood tests wont show if you are deficient. Am now trying liquid magnesium suppliment but wondered if anyone had similar experiences with fatigue?

I assume your blood results showed you not being anemic? I have UC and i will say when i was in a flare and lost a decent amount of blood i would feel this way. even today sometimes i just have those days where i am tired. might be the UC, might not be...

Is the "food combining diet" your only approach to treating your UC?

In general, autoimmune disease activity makes people fatigued. It's part of the illness and I don't think its necessarily connected to a specific nutrient deficiency, although that's possible also.

In addition to iron and B-12, you should have your vitamin D levels checked.

And you should be using rectal mesalamine to treat your disease. Welcome to the forum.

Yeah. I think you are trying to make too much of a science out of it. UC is an autoimmune disease where your immune system is constantly attacking your own body (colon). This causes fatigue all by itself.

I think most of us have fatigue. I have seen a few docs for it but no one has a clue why I can sit down and fall asleep anywhere. I just have to keep moving or I wear out quick. If I sit down I feel like I go into a coma.. can't move body parts, lol.

@Dr-A. I have the exact same problem. Ready to sleep from early morning hours. Just got my blood work done yesterday. Other than low hbg (12), everything looks normal... This stupid thing is going to get me in trouble at work one of these days.

Was tested for full blood count - doctor did not mention anaemia so im assuming im not anaemic.
I take pentasa when in a flare but have been in remission for 4 months. Ive read about the theory of your immune system making you tired but would this still apply while in remission? Im keen to rule out other factors before I have to just accept the fatigue as something you live with.
Im not yet certain if the food combining diet is the way to go. On the plus side its helped me to stay in my longest period of remission also stools are better formed and have less mucus. But have lost a lot of weight which I cant seem to put back on and am thinking this isnt helping my energy levels. Will see what the dietician says in a couple of weeks.Thanks for the replies

Losing weight and seeing mucous and feeling fatigued sounds like you are not in remission, but maybe not. Maybe you're just not eating enough.

Check vitamin D!

Sorry Kazbern I didn't say I was seeing mucous. Im basing my remission on no B or D or urgency. Basically fatigue is the main problem at the moment. Weight loss is a bit worrying but has reached a level where im slightly underweight but not losing anymore. The food combining diet means I cant have protein and carbs together so I am only having one protein meal per day where before I would mix both with both meals. Not sure If thats the reason for weightloss.
Vitamin D would have been checked in the last blood test.

Been taking a magnesium suppliment to see if that helps with energy but only started a couple of days ago.

Anyone have good results with magnesium? My understanding is that your blood only holds about 1% of your magnesium so tests are not very good at spotting if you are deficient.

Hi JC... I couldn't tell by your post if you were still taking your pentasa? I have to take pentasa as a maintenance med. I cant go without it. The first sign that Im coming into a flare is fatigue. Before I notice anything else one day Im ok, the next Im like 'Why am I SO FREAKING TIRED!!!'. My limbs feel like lead and I can sleep all day long and still feel completely shattered. I know my body and this means Im coming into a flare. It sounds to me like you are coming into a flare up.

Sometimes it takes a while to get used to this disease. It took me years to finally accept that I needed to manage it and understand all of its nuances within my body, because its not always the same for everybody.

My advice to you, if you can get your hands on some predfoam (Im in the UK too) and use that until you are feeling better, then go back to using the pentasa suppositories ...forever. Don't stop using them even if you think you are in remission. If I miss one or two doses, I notice symptoms. I absolutely hate this disease, and after 10 years Im still learning how to manage it.

I have UP since 2011, currently I dont see blood, Mucus, no D. But I have liitle pain in lower left side and sever fatigue. I am very tired, even I cannot speak idea , only taking on Pentasa suppository 1g per night. What should be the reason?

Note: I am eating and sleeping well.

Thank you UCandMe. I have not had any bloodwork for the last 6 months. But I believe you are correct that I have issue with low vitamin D and B12. I am not a fan of seafood and I used to eat read meat. I have to find alternatives for both vitamins. I have removed read meat, spicy from my diet.
