No I'm the only one with anything like that (that we know of, obviously it's possible that a long dead ancestor could have had it). I decided when I was in hospital the first time, that I'm not having kids and risking passing it on, so it will die with me, hopefully.

The specialist told me it was caused by a faulty gene, so I think my mum and dad were just a bad combination.

My sister had kidney problems when she was little.

My grandad had a stomach ulcer, and later died of stomach cancer, I don't know if that is related to bowels though, it was definitely just an ulcer.

My dad died of cancer of the oesophagus, which was due to excessive smoking and drinking, no problems with it before he got the cancer. It was very fast, he just got ill and died in a few months.

My maternal uncle has colitis. He had one flare a few years back and claims he's cured himself with daily meditation.
I have 4 siblings and they all have some form of irritable bowel, as do my some of my cousins, and my mother. I had genetic testing done a couple years ago and showed a marker for crohns/coltiis. My mother did the same test and also had a marker. Sooo, I got it from my mama.
Unrelated, the test also showed a marker for MS which has always freaked me out.

i had a great aunt wih crohns, so ive been told. My brother, mother and her mother have ibs. My father and his mother both had colon cancer. Alsi, my brither and mother have different auto immune diseases. Seems im genetically prone to auti immune issues and with crappy colons on both side of family my immune system decided to start there.

I think you're right Marianne. I wouldn't be surprised if someone in my family has it, either currently or in the past. No one talks about these things. My mother is especially secretive but she's also often suffering from "stomach issues". My dad has diverticulitis. They both take a lot of fiber and they always have. I don't know if that's normal for people without digestive issues. No one has ever mentioned UC or IBD to me growing up. I didn't know these conditions existed until I was diagnosed. I didn't even know a person in my school that had it. sheltered kid...

Hi, Mother and great aunt had crohns, I have crohns. My mom's GI stood in front of us and announced that IBD is not an inherited disease. Really?

Fortunately no one in my family has IBD, but no autoimmune disease either. I am the lucky one. Eating disorder, IBD, etc. But I'm managing.

word of advice: if you have a fu*king autoimmune disease don't reproduce.

I couldn't agree more Dreadsteel, I wish my mom never reproduced (she was a lousy mom regardless of the crap she literally passed down to me) but since I got sick with my IBD before she got sick with her's (and the fact that she already had 5 kids before me) that alone says that not everyone knows what kind of health issues are in store for them....same with me too, I didn't get sick with Crohn's until a year and 4 months AFTER I had my first out of 2 kids total, and when I asked my GI if crohn's was hereditary he said they weren't sure (this was before my mom got sick with her UC) and he said that I shouldn't let it stop me from having one more child (2 was all I wanted to have) so at the time being in my mid 20's I figured that was sound enough advice...if only I really knew what the hell IBD entailed, I would have probably not had another child, but I love my son to death and luckily so far neither of my kids have an IBD though my daughter (first born) does have IBS.

Can't win for losing in this life that is full of negative potential to pass down lousy genes.

@pb4 if i were you, i would watch their diet very carefully even though i think that's almost impossible with all the chemicals they put in our crops and their stress levels.

I believe i have personally asked 3 GIs with 30~40 years of experience regarding the hereditary & genetics of IBD and they all confirmed that yes it plays a huge role, in fact it makes anyone with such genes susceptible to any autoimmune disease.


Though i am hopeful toward the new antisense drugs for Crohn's and possibly for UC.

My sister has Crohns disease and her daughter the same.

My other sisters daughter has Crohns disease too.

and so with my UC that is four family members, which is quite high I think.

can we add more options like 'from mother side' and 'from father side' instead of just has family history or not?
I am thinking of possibility that this could be more than genetic reason. like if 'from mother side' is much higher than 'from father side ' , it could mean that this disease is sort of contagious. it might sound ridiculous but it has not been totally theoretically eliminated. just a guess.

My grandfather on my mothers side had suspected Pancolitis most of his life. I on the other hand developed Crohn's-Colitis - or Crohn's disease isolated to the colon.

Thinking about it just now, he died when I was around 18 - so some 20+ years ago. Perhaps back then it was hard to distinguish/diagnose between Pancolitis and Crohn's-Coltis... Not sure. But I think they had pretty good diagnostic means. So it's doubtful he really could have had Crohn's-Coltis.

One maternal aunt of mine developed Crohn's in her late 30s, one female cousin of my mother had either UC or Crohn's colitis, and one son of a male cousin on mother's side has UC + his brother's son also got UC in adulthood. In summary, my maternal grandfather + 2 of his sisters from a sibship of 12 had descendants with IBD (adult onset)-- so it's not rampant but drifting somewhere in our genetic pool. / Old Hat (34 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

I did have a look (I'm a bit of a genealogy geek on the side), but there was really nothing.

I had to go back to the mid 19th Century to find a relative that had died from Peritonitis, caused by 'Ulcerated Bowels'. Not even certain whether that was UC though or something like Colonic Tuberculosis. That's only 1.5% of my genetic makeup though, so unlikely to have passed down.

Stomach problems were rife though, Ulcers and Cancer everywhere.

Well, they're both in their 20's and living on their own so I can't really watch their diet anymore lol...daughter with the IBS has decided to eat purely healthy and home cooks everything, she seems to be trying to become a vegetarian but says if she craves meat she will eat it. And son goes to the gym a lot so he's all about eating healthier too but will sometimes eat fast-foods. I did tell my daughter not to have kids (she was on the fence about it) but she went ahead and did it anyway, and my poor granddaughter has had nothing but tummy issues since she was born....breaks my heart into pieces.

I know my GI initially 24 years ago was the one that said there likely was some genetic connection they just didn't know enough back then and he said not to let it stop me from having another child if that's what I wanted to do...truth be told I wish I hadn't had any kids, I still may have very likely ended up with crohn's but maybe it wouldn't have been so severe and long lasting of a flare if I hadn't...the stress of kids (even when they're adults) is more overwhelming emotionally than I ever thought it would be.

My aunt (father's sister) has it. I also think my mom had it - although she was never diagnosed. She had a lot of other health issues, and when she went on prednisone for her emphysema *poof*! Her tummy issues vanished. I put it together when I had the same symptoms she did and was diagnosed.

Myself and my son who lost his colon.
My wife's mother died at 52, colon cancer, my wife's colon is pristine,go figure.
Wife's mothers sister had a bag early, but not sure why.
No one else in family that I know about.

Brother and cousin with Crohn's. It seems to have come down through the Irish side of the family. I don't know that side at all, but apparently there have been cases of Crohn's among them.

My brother who has Crohn's also has two boys. Their diets are the usual crap: refined breakfast cereals, bagels, pasta, etc. The younger boy loves salty things like bacon, salami and crisps. The older boy has a total sweet tooth and will always choose sugary snacks like chocolate or cake. They're both rake-thin, so weight isn't an issue. But the SCD it ain't: oh well.

The only family member I am sure suffers from IBD is my nephew (brother's son) who was diagnosed with Crohns at 15.

I have loads of first cousins on my fathers side and would not be surprised if one of them has it as well. We have already lost two cousins to bowel cancer while they were still in their 50's. However we are not that close and still WASP-y enough in this new century to not to ever discuss bathroom habits - not just our own but regarding any of our ancestors either.

Lots of reflux disease, chronic gastritis and IBS through my entire immediate family. My son has a rare disorder that causes inflammation of the esophagus, but I don't know if it will ever be found to have any relation to IBD.

Crohn's can affect the esophagus, it's apparently rare but it does happen.
