For my sins I am an Englishman that lives in mainland China (at the moment), and have done ever since late 2003.
Well since arriving I have generally been quite lucky with my UC, but have had a few minor flare-ups. Then three months ago another flare-up arrived and I am still not stable.
Now this being China I have had to control my illness with TCM (Traditional Chinese medicine) or what we would call in the west, 'grass medicine'. In the past this has always worked well and normally within a few weeks I am heading toward stability, but this most recent flare-up has been different.
Maybe it's because I am getting older, but I really don't know.
I started using my TCM again but it just couldn't seem to control it. In desperation I went to a local hospital and paid a fortune for some mesalazine which I used for a while but it didn't seem to be doing much so I returned to TCM from another doctor.
Unfortunately it continued to give big trouble so I started looking at my diet and remembered reading somewhere that white refined sugar is a major irritant to the gut. This was immediately removed and I asked my Chinese wife to read all the ingredients on anything and everything I was eating. We were both shocked at what we discovered that sugar is in almost everything, but you can cut it down a lot. Thankfully now I have enjoyed some progress and hope that in time my new diet plus TCM with win the day.
