Mesalazine suppositories - Advice please!

I have recently found out that it is possible to buy mesalazine suppositories here in China, but I know nothing about this medication or how affective it is.

My UC is retricted to the Rectum and Sigmoid Colon and always used to respond well to Colifoam, but alas this is not available here.

Does this medication work in a similar way to Colifoam?

Any advice will be most welcome.

It's a suppository so the area it covers is limited. A foam goes further. I do like the suppositories but depending on your symptoms, it may be worth looking to get enemas and suppositories.

Yes I agree the foam is better, but unfortunately treatment for us UC sufferers here in China is woefully poor, hence foam enemas are not available, but strangely enough the mesalazine suppositories are!

UC tends to be more prevalent in western countries rather than here in Asia (and Africa) where diets are higher in fibre, so I guess they lag behind us in the west when it comes to the more modern drugs and remedies for our illness.

My symptoms are the usual for UC, but no blood at the moment, and only a little mucus sometimes when I have a bowel movement.
Usually I move my bowel 2/3 times per day. My stools are sometimes soft, but never diarrhoea, and sometimes very normal.
I do suffer with mild discomfort, bloating, and gas.

My current fare-up has lasted three months approx., and during this time I have seen some blood, but only a small amount.

A recent colonoscopy showed that the blood was coming from an ulcer/polyp inside my rectum, and there was some inflammation in my sigmoid colon, but the rest was free of inflammation.

For inflammation in the sigmoid colon, a mesalamine suppository will be useless.

On the good side, mesalamine rectal meds are much better for long term use than any steroid product. Steroids over the long term will damage the tissue of the rectum.

So get the suppositories and use them. And look for mesalamine retention enemas to help with the sigmoid colon.

Meslamine/Mesalazine enemas work better for those of us with inflammation in both the rectum and sigmoid colon. Are those available?

Hi iPoop,

As far as I know Meslamine/Mesalazine enemas are not available, only suppositories!

To be honest I was suprised that the suppositories were available because this is China, and they lag a long way behind the west in the treatment of this illness.
This is why I use TCM(traditional Chinese medicine) better known as 'grass medicine' in the west, because (1) not many meds are available, and (2) the rediculous price of western drugs here!!
