Just diagnosed with UC pancolitis and in need of support PLeaSE

So i recently posted but i might have messed up so im gonna try again.
Around Christmas time I started getting blood in the stool so i went to the hospital... They did a finger up bad area exam ;( then i got admitted very quickly. They gave me a colonoscophy and i didn't get most of the info..thanks mom, but I have Pancolitis and its honestly scaring me alot. They put me on asacol and some iron pills called feramax. This is when i gets messy, I started getting worse but it tried school once the winter break was over and then i had alittle blood accident in front of everyone...ahhh memories good memories. I went home and a few days later i started getting extreme pain and nausea and had alot of trouble walking. i had 20-30 bathroom visits every day and was so sick and i thought this was gonna be my life. i had to visit my pediatrition and i had alot of trouble doing so. I started puking lime green right before i came into the building. He asked me a couple questions and i started to feel moar pain then he thought i might be having an appendicitus so i got taken into the hospital real quick and it started getting horrific and they got me on morphine. i got flown to vancouver in childrens and They told me my disease was deeply underestimated and it only angered the colitis. I left recently and im in school most days but its been hard and im on prednisone and soon to be on imuran and i can take it. I really need some info on what im up against

I can't believe you to attend school during such a bad uc flare. Must be very difficult.

Uc goes through peroids of flares (what you are experiencing now) and remission (an absence of symptoms). The process of getting into remission can take a while, as it involves trial and error, try one medication, wait a while and see if you improve, then try another.

20mgs of prednisone seems like a pretty low dosage, most start at 40mgs and stay on it until they are 90 percent healed or so. 6 weeks is just a guess, you might need prednisone for longer, depending on results. Usually it is variable.

Imuran takes 2 months to reach therapeutic levels in the body, so expect to be on prednisone at least that long.

Prednisone causes lots of temporary side effects. Expect, acne, insomnia, mood swings, insatiable appetite, and other side effects.

Sorry you have to deal with this a such a young age. My son just turned 14....I can't imagine.

You have many options so don't make yourself sick with worry. You and your parents together should educate yourselves as much as possible about UC.

The one thing I want to stress to you because you're young and your body is still growing is to be careful about taking prednisone. It should only be used as a rescue drug to get a flare under control. It's not to be used for maintenance. It's very damaging to your body.

Again, Read up as much as you can with your parents about this disease. You'll get through it.

When I had UC, I had bloody stool and felt like I had to go all the time. I was 8. I remember pediatricians didn't know much about the disease. Be sure you have a good gastroenterologist - a specialist. Pediatricians overlooked my initial symptoms too, and by the time I got to a specialist, the UC was so widespread I had to have surgery and my entire large intestine and rectum were removed for a permanent ileostomy. This might sound scary but I'm really glad it happened - life has been really good for 40 years! Know you have options, study up on what you can find out, and don't be afraid to ask questions. Other people here are really great to help you learn more about medicines - super info from them. There was such a short time from my diagnosis to surgery, I can't really remember much about my medicines - except that I was allergic to Azulfadine and took about 23 pills a day in a cupcake cup! Lots of iron, etc. But if your flare ups are too much to endure, ask your gastrolenterologist (and people here online) about possible surgical options for you.
No need to suffer constantly, but if it's manageable, then you'll have a better quality of life. It's all about your quality of life. Keep us posted!

Hey! So weird, I'm also 14 and just diagnosed at Christmas time. Still super new to all this, so I can't give much advice. But others on this forum have helped me so much, and I know they'll help you too. Just want you to know you're not alone, I'm going through the same exact thing. :)

Hey, Its always good to hear that, But isn't it worrying though like the j pouch and stuff is pretty worrying and the symptoms and side effects especially in school but i hope we get through the start. : )
