As IBD mother should we breast feed or not?? confused

I was breastfed as were all my other siblings (I'm the last born) my mom had UC but didn't get sick with it until her mid 60's a few years after I got sick with my Crohn's in my early 20's, now that's not to say that none of my other siblings still won't end up with IBD but so far I'm the only unlucky one...pretty sure I would have gotten it whether she breast fed me or not.

I breastfed both my kids (both are in their 20's) and so far no IBD and hoping more than anything there won't be IBD for them but since it does run on my side they are at a higher risk than the general population that doesn't have a parent with IBD.

Both of you are thinking wrong. Whether the inhereted susceptibility comes from genes or bacteria, the point is your mom had them, you have UC and your siblings don't. That is par for the course in anything that is not majority inherited.

Saying "I have UC and my siblings don't" is as meaningless for bacteria transmission as it is for gene transmission. Your siblings not having UC does not disprove any known/proven gene associations, nor does it disprove the possibility that human mothers pass a similar bacteria to what the mouse mothers pass.

Ladies, this article is reporting on a study about mice, not humans. Breastfeeding the best thing you can do for your child - please don't stop because of misleading articles.

What's unfortunate about this is that they aren't exploring why the mother's are getting susceptible bacteria in the first place. From my understanding, French mothers produce richer and more nutritious breast milk better they have better diets. They could just do a double blinded controlled study on these mothers and control for antibiotic usage, stress, diet, environment and so fourth. Figure out what is weakening the bacterial diversity we've had for generations and we have a better understanding. I think the hygiene hypothesis answers this question rather well from an environmental standpoint.

Nevertheless, the benefits of breastfeeding outweigh the risks, as children are infused with bacterial cultures needed for immunity - l. reuteri is a major one. The good bacteria far outnumber the bad. And it's not just the bacteria in breast milk that is vital - it's the lactoferrin (helps iron absorption), immunoglobulin, whey protien. All these aforementioned things are, paradoxically, protective of colitis.

I was bf and I also bf my daughter for almost a year. I still think I did the best thing for her. Only time will tell as she is only 22 months yet but I did what I thought was best.
