I feel like I've tried just about
everything there is to try as far as UC goes. I've been up and down (mostly down) for the last almost two years. Every time I feel like I'm having some kind of breakthrough, I fall flat on my ***. I'm starting to lose hope again, and getting closer to taking the surgical plunge and get as close to my old life back as I can. I know we all have our sob stories, so enough of that.
My question is I just realized of all the meds I've been on, I've never tried Colazal. How does it stand up to Lialda. Is it generally given before Lialda is tried or after? I've been on Lialda twice now. My GI took me off wondering if it was making things worse. Then we reintroduced it a couple of months ago. I don't think it does squat for me, one way or another.
I'm about
to go to a new GI. I've had zero luck with biologics. I'm hoping to start Entyvio soon and am holding out a little hope for that. I think it's clear I don't respond to the antiTNFs, so maybe Entyvio will be my miracle drug. Before I try that, though, I'm wondering if Colazal is worth a shot?

same active ingredient as Lialda. But the release
location should be a little different. It is cheap.

To answer your question on colazal - I think there is some literature suggesting colazal has better left sided efficacy. As such, it is a better option for those with left sided activity. Not sure how lialda stacks up to it... perhaps it is distributed more evenly.

Colazal is available in generic. It does not include a delayed release coating, like lialda does. Each Colazal capsule contains 750 mg of balsalazide disodium, a prodrug that is enzymatically cleaved in the colon to produce mesalamine (5-aminosalicylic acid or 5-ASA), an anti-inflammatory drug.

technically, I would call the enzyme-cleaving the delayed release function. Lialda does it with a coating, colazal delays via chemistry.

Thanks for the info! So, it's likely that since Lialda doesn't work, Colazal won't as well? Or more fitting in my case, since nothing has worked thus far, it is likely nothing is going to work.

Colazal works better on me than Lialda. I wouldn't expect a huge difference because they are both in the same class of drugs, but it's definitely worth trying. Also, for me, Colazal the brand works better than the generic form of it.

from the resources thread:
Apriso® - Eudragit-L (pH6) coating of 5-ASA-polymer coated beads, small bowel and colonic release
Asacol® - Eudragit-S coating that releases at pH7, ileocolonic release - replaced with delzicol.
Asacol-HD® - Eudragit-S and Eudragit-L coating, ileocolonic release
Canasa® suppositories – topical rectal release
Colazal® - diazo bond to inert polymer, colonic release
Delzicol®
Lialda® - Eudragit-S coating of metallomatrix 5-ASA, ileocolonic release
Olsalazine (Dipentum®) - diazo bond of two 5-ASAs, colonic release
Pentasa® - ethylcellulose/5-ASA beads, small bowel and colonic release
Rowasa®, sfRowasa®, or Melamine Rectal Suspension (generic) enemas – topical rectosigmoid releases (sfRowasa is sulfate free for those with sulfa allergies)
Sulfasalazine (generic) – diazo bond with sulfapyradine, colonic release.
I personally would give it a try before giving up but i wouldn't expect any miracles. It seems like people respond to these things or they don't.
