Hello!

I recently started humira, I took all four shots, the next day I almost passed out after walking to class. I've spent the past several days feeling hot, faint, and I keep becoming nauseous, to the point it's difficult to eat. My bms still have blood and mucus, and I'm worried that, since my UC is mostly associated with the lower part of my colon, the swelling is causing me to become constipated (and when I become constipated, I become nauseas and spend days vomiting unable to eat.) I have had bms, but not as many per day as I had before. Are these common side effects of Humira? Does anyone have any tips that could help me?

If you're still having a decent size bm each day I wouldn't worry a whole lot about being *too* constipated, if that makes sense. I mean like, to the point you'd be ill from the constipation. Vomiting because of constipation sounds really unusual to me. But maybe other people experience it. If it's safe maybe you could try enemas with your Humira? They really help heal up the lower colon. Might be a good idea especially if your UC is mainly down low.

As for the nausea, I'm not sure. I think you should take your temperature, in case you've caught a bug, and if you don't feel any better you can always call and ask your doctor. You might also consider asking the folks in the Chron's (and RA I think) forums too, because I think some people there take Humira too and might be able to offer insight if you don't get more responses! I'm sure you'll get some though.

Prior to starting humira, I suffered (months ago) from nausea and vomiting, but my doctors were unsure why. One believed it was GERDs or gastritis, and the other that it was a symptom of my UC. I suffer from reactions whenever I take the steroid enemas...my legs swell and it's difficult for me to walk. I'm also still unsure why that happened, as the enemas aren't supposed to have side effects like that. The nausea/vomiting had gone by the time I started Humira, which is why I don't understand how it's come back.

Have you tried mesalamine enemas? I've had good luck with them. The reaction to the steroids is strange!

Maybe they should double check for Chron's just to be safe, although humira treats both. I'm not sure. I've had multiple doctors double check me.

Do you get heartburn a lot? I used to, especially when I had my first flare, to the point I had esophageal erosion. Apple cider vinegar tablets helped a lot with that. But I have also used Prilosec.

I do get side effects from steriod enemas too. I break out on the back of my legs, dry mouth, wake up all hours, a touch of moon face and headaches. But the they seem to help me down there and I put up with it! Probably shouldn't!
