Oral acne meds

I know there's an established relationship between taking Accutane and developing UC. Another med commonly used is tetracycline, an antibiotic which often causes severe flaring in people with IBD. I don't know about any of the other acne meds, but I'd use caution.

As suggested by the above comments, you have to exercise a bit of caution with acne medications. Unless they are topical agents, the systemic ones can induce UC in susceptible people. Accutane has been the subject of controversy (see resulting lawsuits) since it is indicated in colitis.

For me, cow dairy is always something that increases my breakouts. They seem to disappear when I eliminate it. I invite you to eliminate certain food groups that could be causing it. I would definitely that first over some of the dangerous medications out there on the market.

I am a bit surprised your doctor did not mention this to you.

accutane isnt the only drug for acne. You could try spirnolactone if you're female. There are also hormonal options, like birth control pills. Antibiotics are used often, topically or orally. I can't say whether they would effect your UC but there is a good chance antibiotics aren't the best option. If I were you, Id try to go the topical route, unfortunately I've tried so many topicals and they never work for me. I have used spirnolactone with luck.. birth control pills with estrogen gave me an amazing break from acne but estrogen can increase the chance of DVT, which is already higher in people with UC... That's the last thing I want to deal with.

I took Accutane in my 20s and now have UC. Cant say they are connected but my kids are going to learn to deal with their skin without using anything like Accutane.

ziana. I had that too. It didn't work for me. It has clindamyacin though and that's really bad for people with UC.

I was taking minocycline for three years before my diagnosis and I am certain it contributed to my UC. I discontinued the minocycline after my diagnosis and now follow the Paleo diet (no wheat, dairy, grains or refined sugar) and my skin looks great.
