Mesalamine enema past expiration?

Okay people! New to this site! Got a question and stumbled on to this site... I have been in remission for quite sometime (3 years or so) but I have a flare coming on and I want to know if anyone knows if it's okay to take Mesalamine enema past the expiration date. I've kept them around for emergencies like this but now I see they expired in March of 2014 😣... So they have been in the foil all this time and it's On the inside. I read in the medical instructions that if the color is brown not to use it- but other then that- should I be concerned? Just want to take these until I can get a doctors appointment... Thoughts???

Pharmacist here...if it were me I wouldn't use them. With this particular medication, it won't harm you, but it probably won't do a lot to help either. Expiration dates are based on the degradation (shelf life) of the medication. I'd call your doctor's office and ask if they can call in a prescription for you since you feel a flare coming on.

gosh i have so many enemas here that will eventually expire because i haven't been using them. it makes me sick. I don't knwo what to do with them either... I figure I will need them someday, but by then, they will be past the date. I am not a big believer in expiration dates being accurate. I think they mostly exist to make people buy more stuff - except in the case of unpreserved foods, lol, then if it's old, it's just OLD and maybe rotten :)

I would be wary of using anything liquid that's past its expiration date. There's a lot of nasty stuff that can grow in those kinds of solutions (fungal/ bacterial) and you have no way of knowing how effective any biocide-type ingredient is, past its expiration.
