I also know my GI mentioned that the #1 factor in a great outcome is the surgeon. If I am 99% going to get a good result with a particular surgeon, i would go there. I wouldn't want to risk my life being a living hell with a bad surgeon.
If the patient is really sick/emergency, high predisone dosages, or surgeon's preference then it is done in 3-steps.
I had to have a 3-step j-pouch while I tappered off of Predisone and my body healed. Living with the 1st step (end ileo) was much easier than the 2nd step (Loop ileo).
I woke up from my colectomy and I felt so much better, my colon wasn't poisoning my body anymore.
