I was reading a People magazine the other day and in it they had 3 smoothie recipes. One for immunity, one for energy, and another for anti-inflammatory. I was intrigued by the last one since I am currently flaring and figured I'd give it a shot. I honestly feel so much better today than I have the past several days. Had bloody diarrhea before I made the smoothie, but after I drank it the amount of blood significantly decreased and was pretty much next to nothing. I also only went to the bathroom maybe 4 times today when past days it has been at least 8 and the amount of stool today was less also. Could just be a fluke, could be power of suggestion, who knows. All I know is whether or not it's actually helping it's a pretty tasty smoothie regardless so I figured I'd share the recipe.
3/4 cup water (I added more because it was pretty thick)
1/2 a frozen banana (I just put a whole one in)
1/2 cup frozen pineapple chunks
1 cup blueberries
Juice of 1 small lime
1/4 cup cilantro
1/2 tsp grated ginger (I just used the powder from the spice cabinet because I forgot to buy fresh at the store)
It may have healing powers or it may just act as a kind of placebo but if you've got nothing to lose why not?

Anything that is considered "soft foods" usually makes me feel better temporarily during a flare at least. I try to eat bland soups, and liquid diet types.

if you're flaring you should skip the lime and blueberries. Unsure about
pineapple during a flare, but the bromelain is helpful. Probably placebo effect.

that sounds really delicious. i'd leave out the cilantro just because i despise green smoothies or anything sweet/savory. i'd recommend adding some turmeric in there!! i love this one smoothie i do with 1 cup yogurt, 1 frozen banana, 1 cup fresh pineapple, a little orange juice, and a dash of turmeric. it is SOOO creamy and delicious. reminds me of a pina colada.

Today I had Sushi. Twice. And right now, I feel fine. But ask me again in the morning.

I just got myself a blender :) so I am happy to see this post.
Any green leafy/cabbagey smoothie is good to...or any smoothie honestly is since raw fruits and vegetables are a butt to digest during flares.

Banana- You don't really taste the cilantro, but I love cilantro so who knows lol. But I think the cilantro is part of the anti-inflammatory. That and the ginger I think and then the rest is more for flavor. It's not enough to turn the smoothie green though.

If I had to name one food that I would say I've seen evidence that it helped me get out of a flare it would be blueberries.
There is a poster here who had a friend that swore by blueberries to get them out of Crohn's flares.

That's awesome Levi. I know they're high in antioxidants and all that good stuff. They seemed to help me. Might have to go buy some more blueberries! Lol

Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory disease so by definition anti inflammatory things would theoretically help. I'm not saying it's a cure-all by any means but I know it helped me so I posted it. That's all. Not forcing it on anyone.
