Does anybody know what makes those embarrasing tummy noises? I get them just before I flare and am getting them now
. See what happens next week with my tummy.

I believe its the gas and digested food that is going through your intestines. (don't quote me on this though, i'm still learning) :)

Why are those sounds loudest when we are flaring. Is it due to the gas and food moving through the colon more quickly?

And why do they only seem to occur when the office is quiet? Well, all is quiet except my tummy.

This is my theory - don't know if it's true or not but I think I remember reading about
this at one time or another. Uc'ers have a dysfunctional colon - when we have stool in our colons while we are flaring our colons work harder to expel it. It pushes it along at a faster rate making the noises (gurgles) more pronounced. I know that when I eat, I can hear my intestines grumbling by digesting food. So if the gurgles are higher in the small intestine, the grumbles you hear is your intestines digesting food. If it's in the stomach, your hungry. I'm not sure of the mechanics behind this though I'm sure I could find it on the internet if you're interested.

also, certain places in my stomach growl louder than others. for example, i feel the gurgling and hear it the most on my lower right side. that is also where i get abdominal pain when i flare. does anyone else have these "hot spots?"

I know that this is a super old thread, but I have similar issues. I seem to get the growls before and during a flare and they come right from the inflamed area of my colon (left side). It's as if my UC is waking up and saying "I'm down to party."
Does anyone else get the growls as a sign of or during a flare?

I get gurgling noises from the left side too when inflammation is bad. I always thought it was because the size of the passage inside the colon is greatly reduced because of the inflammation. As stool moves down it has to travel through what small
opening is left which causes the sound. Or maybe as it moves down it displaces gas that moves back the other direction causing the sounds.

People with uc have very noisy guts, it's common. It sounds like a jungle down there sometimes. If you listen closely, you might just hear monkeys and tigers haha.

I get this too during flare my stomach could have its own talk show! if I'm in a meeting or somewhere where its embarrassing I tell people my stomach must be growling because I'm hungry even though I could have just eaten. lol

Just be glad you're not in the dental or massage therapy industry. Their stomachs are just inches from people's heads and it's generally quiet in the rooms. I often hear THEIR stomachs growling. :)
In offices you can always take a pad of paper and do the fake tearing out a piece and crackling it up. Or you can do the fake cough, or the fake chair shuffle. Fake clearing of throat is good too! Being really talkative is great too!! Bring candy or treats for everyone! It creates more noise and distraction. :) Start a controversial topic and then just watch how everyone starts talking. More noise! Yay. If it's your office get a fan, it creates wonderful white noise. Oh how can I forget the fake laugh! It's as annoying as hell, but everyone in offices is annoying anyways so it doesn't matter!
Just don't drink lots of water, it makes it worse. If you get a granola bar and just very slowly chew on it, or some bread, you'd be surprised how it helps!
Good luck!

Funny you should mention dental industry, arizona. One of the hygienists at my dentist's office has IBS and the first thing she does after she says hello is apologize for the fact that she has IBS and her stomach makes very loud noises all the time! I always tell her not to worry, mine has been known to "sing" right along with hers.

When I was in grad school, shortly after diagnosis, my guts would interrupt the professors' attempts at Socratic teaching, which was embarrassing as hell. I cannot count the number of times my intestines have been the loudest part of a meeting. Sucks for sure, but whaddya gunna do? Beats my farts, which win prizes all their own . . .
