Has Flagyl or Cipro helped your UC, have u taken them at the same time?

I really think Cipro helps me and my current rectal docs says I can take for months because I have reoccuring fissure with Entyvio (Entyvio give me bad diarreah for 9 days after infusion, but now that I'm on Prilosec it might be differenty on my next infusion, we will see, prilosec has definetly calmed my gi tract down)

My rectal doc wanted me on Flagyl but before vacation and I wanted to have a cocktail and that wouldn't not have worked, so he put me on Cipro.

Is flagyl the GO TO antibiotic for our guts? I have a script from him that he wanted me to try.

Any thoughts?

Also, how long being off antibiotics can I get a stool test? My doc wants me to do that too.

Sometimes I take both at the same time... I rotate antibiotics for pouchitis. I can also drink while on Flagyl but some people do have reactions to Flagyl and alcohol; I guess that you could test it before your vacation.

If you are going to take Probiotics then you'll want to take them apart from when you take the antibiotics. I'm not sure how long for the stool test after you discontinue the antibiotics.

Flagyl and Cipro helped my UC symptoms but didn't help me achieve remission. They both can cause some pretty serious side effects, including neuropathy, so I would lean towards other options (e.g. trying other biologics).

NO! Both of them make my UC worse. Flagyl is really an amebicide, originally marketed to treat protozoan infections. One should not stay on it long because it can lead to peripheral neuropathy. Cipro can also cause longterm side effects, including tendon problems. You can look that up on National Institute of Medicine online. Too many antibiotics can lead to C-diff infection, besides. / Old Hat (34 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

Both Cipro and Flagyl have side effects but Cipro is the one with the “black box” warning. My doc prescribed both Cipro and Flagyl for my perianal abscess. I looked up their side effects and warnings and dropped the Cipro and stayed with Flagyl. The good news is that not only did Flagyl clear my abscess but it jump-started me out of my flare and into remission.

Please consult with your doc before deciding to drop one or more of your prescribed antibiotics.

I have remained in remission since. I try to maintain it by monitoring my diet for triggering foods, supplements, and taking probiotics every day. Hopefully probiotics will help to encourage good bacteria in my gut so that I won't need to take antibiotics again for a long time.

Sorry to see you still haunting this board looking for help. As you remember I did the triple antibiotic combo years ago to try to clear out a nightmare bout of proctitis, and it was the only thing that worked. Having said that I think using antibiotics for UC is generally not well understood and therefore risky.

I am fighting off a flare caused by switching from Salofalk tabs to Colazal. I am taking a tbl spoon of coconut oil everyday which is said to control fungus overgrowth, particularly candida. There is another product I am looking at called citricidal which is supposed to clear out even more harmful fungi, parasites and viruses. I always figured natural products are a little easier on the system.

Flagyl caused peripheral neuropathy in me and I was only on it for 10 days. Fortunately the effect was temporary. It was highly disturbing to not be able to feel my finger tips or toe tips.

It didn't fix anything anyway, other than rule out certain parasites.

Yes i took both cipro and flagyl in 2011. Was very sick anyway so no change in symptoms. Not like i wouldve noticed anyway. Still have peripheral neuropathy since that hospital stay. It gets much worse when i go on vanco or flagyl again. Its almost debilitating.

Yes and yes. It was the only thing that was able to get me into a short term remission. Lasted about 1 month but didn't work again and I had colectomy.

I've been on flagyl a few times and never noticed any changes...the colon and rectum surgeon I saw (he once gave me a script for it too) warned me never to drink wine and eat caesar salad while on it cuz apparently some of his patients did and threw up as a result. I think alcohol should be avoided while on antibiotics especially but also it can be hard on the colon (trial and error of course for each).

No! I agree with Old Hat...first time I was in hospital in a bad flare...wasn't getting any better, and it seemed after 7 days of both drugs, on day 9 I started to get better...fast forward one year, and a trip to emerg...got put on both and got way worse within 24 hours...was admitted next day, and just on solu-medrol and immediate improvement...3 days after that I started Remicade...it's been 20 months, and DR says I am in remission!

Oh, god! I was on cipro/flagyl combo for ten days-worst time of my life, and NO! I'm not exaggerating! It made me feel weak, nauseous, brain fog, just all around worst sick, horrible diarrhea, helpless feeling. I can't say which caused me so much grief, maybe one, maybe both? Either way, it was awful.

If the biological(Entyvio) isn't healing the fissure then you need to do something. I hated Cipro when I had a colon but I take it now with my j-pouch and have no issues with it.

Flagyl treats C.diff so it's a good mix to add Flagyl with the Cipro since Cipro can cause c.diff. So if the Flagyl isn't treating the fissure on its own then I'd add the Cipro.

Obviously no one wants to take antibiotics but at this point you need to do something with that fissure.
