Paleo Autoimmune Protocol?

Hi all,

I was wondering if some of you have tried the Autoimmune Protocol (AIP)? It's a paleo-based elimination diet that's specifically geared toward autoimmune diseases. More info about it here: http://www.thepaleomom.com/autoimmunity/the-autoimmune-protocol

I am currently on a restrictive version of the SCD and am making fair progress, but if I am not altogether better a month from now, I am considering giving the AIP a try.

Hi Camille! I usually do AI paleo during flares, and then normal Paleo plus white rice normally. I like AI because some of the foods that they target are ones that bother me during flares. I know I have no issues with eggs, but when things are rough dairy and nightshades are DEFINITELY not my friends. I think it's worth a try to see how you feel! I had a tough time on SCD and found paleo/AI to better target things that are issues for me. I suspect I have issues with Fodmaps and am doing some testing with those now. I find that diet makes a big difference for me- good luck!

I looked at the allowed foods on the AIP diet and it is similar to my list, not exact. SCD had foods my gut disliked so couldn't use that food list. I have never found an exact "name" diet my gut agreed with but diet mod. is the reason for my remission and is working for me.

If you can afford RX meds I suggest you take them because you may get better symptomatically through diet mod. but inflammation can still be in your gut and that needs to be controlled too or may develop into cancerous polyps.

Diet of course can help keep inflammation low. But no lecture from me if you disagree, we all get to make our own choices.

Mesalamine enemas are one of the most effective and least systemic RX choices available with very few side-effects.

Re: meds, I see your point though it's a bit scary as I've not been on them for six years. My problem is I've not found a GI doctor I felt I could trust, so I've been winging it on my own -- and kept my head in the sand to some extent, through long periods of remission.

Also, I'm currently breast feeding and don't plan to stop soon, so there's that.

Are enemas the same as suppositories? The latter is the format my doctor had put me on.

I am pretty game for diet mods, but found AIP way too restrictive. No seed based spices and no "nightshades" is a step too far for me. I can't get my head around the logic behind those

i tried aip back in 2012 but found it did not help me at all. i did it for about 2 months but was too thin to keep avoiding foods that i could eat. it focuses a lot on greens, cruciferous veggies, and fruit and i could not eat those things. i do well with dairy, eggs, nut butters, and potatoes which were all cut out so that was a large portion of calories for me. i don't think it is very good for UC flares due to its restrictive nature and it was not made for UC patients obviously. it might be something to try if you are not flaring to check for food sensitivities.

Enemas are liquid whereas supps are solid.
Enemas reach and coat a higher and greater area in the lower region.
Enemas have done so much more for me than supps and in your case will have no effect on breastfeeding as they are topical in that area only.

My plan is to start hunting for a new GI doctor in September -- I may have to meet a few before I find one I like -- and I'll definitely be asking about enemas. It wasn't a format my former doctor talked about, probably because it's a bit less practical than suppositories, I imagine?

Camille, if your UC is mild and you're having a flare, you might want to try wild oregano oil. There are a few threads on here about it. It's an effective anti-bacterial against gram negative bacteria and I've found it quite useful, on a short term basis only, in helping me head off what seems to be the start of a flare.

Thank you FSLondon, it's the first I hear about this. It looks like it's not recommended while breastfeeding, but I'll add it to my list of things to try when baby #2 is weaned.
