I suffered on my taper, too-I took Nytol (herbal at first then when that didn't work I went on to the good stuff!!), I can't really say it made a massive difference-I was still exhausted and really struggled getting off to sleep-but it helped keep me asleep for an hour or two longer than usual, and I found I woke less in the night. I also didn't notice any impact on my UC either from the sleeping tablets. I found lavender room mist and hot milk with honey helped somewhat, too.
As hard as it is, the best thing to do is spend a good couple of hours before bed just relaxing, no TV, no PC, maybe just the radio in the background (talk radio is best I find! Helps you nod off!). Really concentrate on your breathing-from your stomach. The time flies once you get into it and hopefully mixed with the Nytol and warm milk you'll be set to fall asleep as soon as you lay down!
