I was diagnosed with severe colitis 2 1/2 years ago but haven't had a colonoscopy since. I was just wondering, after being diagnosed can people get chrons as well? Do some people later on get a colonoscopy and find out it turned into chrons? Or if it can't turn into chrons does chrons-colitis become a new diagnoses? Or do you typically just have one or the other. The symptoms are very similar as I read but I worry sometimes because my symptoms seem to be full GI trac up into the mouth (mouth sores, sore through).

UC doesn't "turn into" Crohn's, or vice versa, but it can be misdiagnosed. Around 10-15% of IBD is indeterminate, i.e. can't be classified as Crohn's or UC. Sometimes indeterminate colitis is identified as Crohn's or UC later on, but not always.

Small bowel disease eliminates UC, but the only way to find out if you have that is to have tests done. You can't go by symptoms alone.

Mouth sores can happen in both crohn's and UC. As NCOT said one doesn't "turn into" the other, misDX sadly happen, there's is a small amount of people that unfortunately do have both (approximately 2%). If your doctor ever mentions crohn's colitis (which I have) please don't mistake it as having both UC and CD, it simply means crohn's is affecting your colon where UC typically hangs out....there are 5 subtypes of crohn's disease, different names corresponding with different parts of the GI tract that CD can affect...you can google "5 subtypes of crohn's disease to see, they have slightly different symptoms as well as possible complications to a degree.

I have UC and I also get mouth sores
As other mentioned mouth sores are consistent with both crohns and UC

I was re diagnosed after years from UC to Crohns. Although they always told me previously they weren't def about UC. Went from UC, to Crohns 'masquerading' as UC to Crohns. But I never really cared as treatment is largely the same ... It only becomes an issue when considering surgery and the differing outcome ie it can cure UC but not Crohns. So personally don't get hung up on the label ... But do have regular colonoscopies so success of treatment can be measured.

Hey nice name. After lurking on the Crohn's forum I've found a fair amount of people with Crohn's are first diagnosed (or misdiagnosed) with Colitis. If it helps put your mind at ease, you can always do an endoscopy. My GI has a tiny camera that you swallow like a pill and it takes pictures on its way through. I assume you would have to "fish it out" when it has made its way through if you know what I mean. I was thinking of asking about it next time I go in since I've had a couple symptoms that may indicate Crohn's after my initial diagnosis of UC. Of the two, I'd prefer to keep my UC diagnosis.

I've had issues with diagnosis - one GI telling my its Crohn's and another telling me its Colitis. The way I see its all IBD and it needs to be dealt with. There is no need to get too concerned about which label you use.

Yeah I feel like I'm talking to myself, or your posts are my post. Definitely don't mean any conflict, it's just very confusing. I only asked you if you could change it because I see you're a new member. Hopefully it a works out lol
