Completely unacceptable - I'm so upset for you! Not only would I complain, I would call my lawyer. Can't believe they do this procedure with no sedation in the UK. I was out cold for my endoscopy.

Sounds like you need to completely change your doctor/hospital. A medical procedure shouldn't feel like some torture nightmare. You deserve so much better. I know it's hard to be the jerk and complain and be demanding, but they absolutely deserve a wake up call.

Er, she had sedation.

I'm sorry. Just seemed like a scary experience. Guess it hit close to home because I have had an endoscopy and need regular colonoscopies. I didn't mean to misrepresent the situation.

I know you didn't elzb, thanks for the support. I was given sedation but I guess it didn't have time to kick in. Also from what I've read on here, other countries seem to knock you out completely? Even with sedation in the UK, it's just the kind that makes you drowsy and relaxed.

You're right, I always feel like a demanding jerk when I complain. None of this was done for me, not once was I asked if I wanted to stop.

Was it laziness or ignorance or something? Have you called to complain?
And to get technical, yes you were sedated. But you were in no condition to begin the procedure. It turned into a stressful nightmare for you. They failed you. That's what it comes down to, they failed you.

Suing the hospital would be misrepresentation the situation. End of the day, complain, but I can't stand the culture of suing doctors. Just drives up the price of treatment for everybody and makes doctors scared to act outside the box in case they get sued by a litigious patient out for revenge and/or money.

Yeah for us with free healthcare it would be counterproductive to sue. Guess it's more an American thing, where you expect to get what you pay for. I was very torn on the issue a couple of years back though, when my father received horrendous treatment during his kidney operation. He didn't want to do anything about it, but the neglect from his surgery has caused him lifelong complications.

I'm going to call the IBD nurses today and maybe see if they think I have a right to make a complaint? Also see what they think about my vomitting, as nothing was found during the endoscopy and my GI is pretty clueless as to why it's happening.

I totally agree, I hope you do file an official complaint. Good luck! Please let us know how it goes! And about what they say about all of the vomiting you've had to endure.

I am apparently resistant to sedation. The two upper endoscopies I've had, I was completely conscious for most of the procedure. I also had a full colonoscopy while wide awake, despite being sedated.

When I went back for another one, I told my doctor that I heard EVERYTHING they said during my last scope, and he made darned sure I was out for that one, by giving me three times the amount of sedative I'd previously had.

Luckily, my doc and his staff was much more professional that that dude who recorded audio from his scope that we heard about in the news a couple of months ago.

Oh, that's right, I read about that! The man accidentally left his phone on and it recorded everything. Shame on those nurses and doctor for doing that. I'm glad they got caught.

I'm completely aware of that? I never expected to be fully under, but I felt absolutely nothing at all. I always remember my scopes and everything that happens, but I am normally more relaxed/drowsy/don't feel the pain as much.

Geeker that's awful! Were you in pain then?

I'm not sure I'm going to bother filing an official complaint in the end... I don't think it will achieve anything.

Gi told me they prefer not to sedate for the upper scope as the drowsiness makes it harder for the patient to concentrate on the nose breathing and the disorientation can contribute to the fear.

I don't blame you for not wanting to complain as there is always the worry that it's held against you. They were in the wrong though, they should have taken far more time to explain to you how to breath and made sure you were ready
