IMO, medications are tools to help troubleshoot the disease. They might help you manage the symptoms until you figure more things out about
your UC pathology.
You will find some users who have weaned off successfully, but they addressed the root cause of the disease before doing so. There is emerging data suggesting that some variants of the disease are microbial in nature, and that the good bacteria need help in overcoming the bad. Some have indeed cured themselves through a procedure called fecal transplant.
I encourage you to do your research. You owe it to yourself to learn every possible modality of treatment. Just know that doctors are trained in the pharmaceutical modality, and as such, they will encourage medications only. Be your own scientist here and experiment. You obviously know your body best.
I encourage you to research things like kefir, resistant starches, probiotics, curcumin, fish oil, essential oils, butyrate, hygiene hypothesis, fecal transplants, whey protein, LDN, l-glutamine, Jordan Rubin, Maker's diet, Paleo diet, Jini Patel Thompson.
Good luck.
