Anyone just take one Lialda a day while in remission? also kidney stones question and UC ?

Anyone taper down to just one Lialda a day? I'm on two right now and in remission. I think two is maintenance? or maybe its one..I know 4 is a full dose. Also anyone experience kidney stones while on lialda or with your UC? My urologist said people with UC are more prone to or get Kidney stones. Didn't know the two went hand in hand really. So nice to have these wonderful diseases UC & Kidney Stones..Jesus. I couldn't imagine having a kidney stone attack and flaring at the same time, Would be hell.. luckily i was in remission when i got a stone a couple months ago.

Another reason why we as IBDers are to keep up on plenty of daily water intake...stones are a common issue for IBDers.

Things like probiotics, curcumin, and psyllium do rather well in replacing mesalamines for the maintenance of UC according to the studies. One a day isn't exactly the therapeutic dose, and if you are doing well now, you might just be able to wean off completely. I personally do not see the point in continuing them, but that's just me. That and there was a study which questioned the effectiveness of mesalamines over time for those that were in remission for some years.

UCers are more prone to kidney stone, not because we don't drink enough water or we take certain meds, but its because the pH of certain areas of the GI system is so messed up that it ends up reversing of what it should be i.e. acidic becomes alkaline or vice-versa. As a result of this change of pH, oxalate which is prepared for excretion goes into a vicious cycle of excretion-resorption, building it up in the kidney. In this process, as and when it finds free calcium ion to bind with, it precipitates as calcium oxalate, which builds up over the period of time, making you run to the ER middle of one night.

So no matter how much water you drink, unless your GI system is restored, you are not going to get relief from kidney stones.

Kidney stones
These are probably the most commonly encountered kidney complications of IBD—particularly oxalate stones. Kidney stones are more common in Crohn's patients with disease of the small intestine than in the general population because of fat malabsorption. Fat binds to calcium, leaving oxalate (a type of salt) free to be absorbed and deposited in the kidney, where it can form into stones. The risk for developing kidney stones of this type is higher in people who have had a number of small bowel resections and are therefore more prone to dehydration. Their urine is more concentrated, a condition that is more likely to lead to stone formation. Symptoms may include sharp pain, nausea, vomiting, and blood in the urine. Kidney stone treatment calls for an increased fluid intake together with a low-oxalate diet (one that's rich in juices and vegetables).

You can likely avoid them though if you keep your fluid intake up daily.
