Do any of you have family members ( siblings, parents, children, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, grandparents...) with UC and find that you both respond or don't to similar meds or have similar foods that work and don't work.
Also do you live in a similar
location.
Like if one lives in Asia and one in Canada
Not like if one is in jersey and one in New York
I'm trying to see if there is correlation between the nature of the disease if people share genes.
Thanks

My son had UC, he now has a pouch for the last 15 years, is UC hit at 21 mine at 32.
He failed all meds at the time, did not try biologics.
His UC perhaps induced by tetracycline/isotretinoin cream
I quit smoking 3 years prior to my UC.
Nether one of us can handle probiotics well, whether pills, yogurt or lacto fermented veggies in my case.
Too many bacteria from probiotics seem to cause a major problem in both of us.
Can't say much about
food.

my dad has UC and uses smoking to stay in remission. i use the patches to stay in remission so we both respond really well to nicotine!
our diets are totally different. his includes a ton of frozen dinners, hoagies, pizza, and alcohol but as long as he smokes, he's is fine.

Brother and cousin with Crohn's. Cousin, er, tragically died of a brain tumour a few years ago... She was living in Thailand when she got it.
No correlations that are obvious to me. As far as I've been able to make out, IBD often presents pretty differently amongst family members - you think they would have similar cases, but they don't.

Myself, my sister, uncle and cousin all UC. Uncle, sister and myself had severe pancolitis that required surgery because we didn't respond to meds. My cousin controls her UC with 6mp.
Edit: I forgot to add my mother has rheumatoid arthritis. Under control with Remicade treatments.

Maternal Grandfather: Ulcerative Colitis or Pancolitis
Maternal Grandmother: Rheumatoid Arthritis
Mother: Rheumatoid Arthritis
Me: Crohn's-Coltis
Niece: Severe IBS
We all live(d) relatively close. Within driving range.
Sister, father and the rest of the family is all fine. Maybe they got the good genes!
Not sure on the food thing between all of us - but I would think this would be wide ranging for all anyway.

I am not aware of anyone in my family who had IBD. I unfortunately had a very drug resistant case.

My maternal grandmother had CD and it is suspected that my paternal grandfather had UC that was kept in remission by smoking. He only ever had symptoms when he quit, so he just kept smoking. They both lived a town apart for most of their adult lives. None of my mother's siblings (nor my mother) have any health issues, however my dad has IBS-D and his siblings that are still alive have no IBD/IBS issues that I am aware of.

these polls can't tell much.
the correlation of occurence of IBD and genes is very well established. The exact correlation varies depending on which of the 168 gene loci you look at. It is modest, typically r=.2 or lower because other factors besides genes are important too.
The question of the correlation of genes and prognosis is an interesting one. I have not seen work looking at it quite the way you ask. Too many other variables involved. But it has been studied how genes predict response to medications. For example:

My mother had CD (died due to complications of CD when I was 10), my great grandmother had either UC or CD (there was no name for it back then) and my daughter has IBS.
My great grandmother lived in Wisconsin. And obviously I lived with my mother here in MI.

thanks for all of your responses
i find it quite interesting
db I know this is not accurate at all but its just out of curiosity, and there are many variables that I have not included
my stats teacher would be pulling out his hair if he saw the way i worded this question

My mom had UC but didn't get it until a couple years after I got sick with CD...odd eh, usually it's the other way around. Obviously mine was triggered before hers, I was in my early 20's her in her mid 60's and I was no longer living at home (thank god) and already a wife and a new mom when I got sick.
Dr. Kevin Rioux did a small paper explaining IBD; the Genetics and inheritance that came in my CCFC journal years and years ago, they simply don't understand how it gets passed down genetically the way they can figure out other diseases that are also genetic/inherited but they do know there is some kind of genetic basis...they still have much to learn.

My IBD genes come from my mother's side. My grandfather and cousin had/have IBS, and my uncle died of colon cancer at a young age. We all lived/live close together (in the same state).
My cousin and I control our symptoms in different ways. She is taking a diet-based approach to her IBS, whereas I'm on some UC drugs and not doing too much diet interventions. The genetic aspect is interesting there, because we got very different genes from our paternal side (but the IBD/IBS comes from the maternal side for both of us). Her father is Native American, whereas my father is UK/European descent. Would definitely be interesting to do some genetic tests.

No IBD anywhere in my family. I'm just lucky, I guess.

My youngest brother (24) is starting to present with the same symptoms I did at 29 - chronic constipation, bleeding, etc... I sent him to my GI team and advised him to get scopes once a year to keep an eye on it. Food doesn't make a difference for either one of us - diets don't help. He doesn't have an official diagnosis yet and I don't want to scare him unnecessarily.
So far, I've been allergic to every maintenance UC drug I've tried. 6 mp is all that's left before biologics.

My mother has irritable bowel with constipation and takes no medications for it. My aunt (on my dad's side) also has irritable bowel and takes anti-spasmatics for it. I'm the first with uc, no crohn's either, and my only sibling is fine (knock on wood). Everybody lived in a small area of nearby towns here. I think I have a definite genetic predisposition for bowel issues (down the maternal and paternal line). 20-ish percent of uc patients have at least one relative with ibd or ibs. I had no trigger that I can figure (no medications or antibiotics for 10+ years prior to my diagnosis).

Oddly enough, no one in my family (and I have all of our ancestry, health, and death records going back 200 years) has any evidence of ANYTHING immune related...I was the only one....odd.....!

I go it alone. No one in my family has anything like this. Supposedly one of my great grandparents had some kind of colon issue, but they don't know specifics. So far it looks like I standout in my family on both sides regarding UC. :shrug
