If I were you, first I'd leave the GE. Second, what medications has he taken? Because, sulfasalizine could help or a mesalimine based drug would also do. If the condition is really that bad, he might have to go on biologics. As a starter, Remicade seems to have the highest success rate of getting people into remission than other biologics that I know of. Later on down the line, I would recommend some CT scans to confirm the diagnosis and make sure none of the upper GI is affected or to make sure no cancer or anything else is growing. The CT diagnosis would also help him to consider surgery as a possible option if he chooses it. I currently have a stoma and am waiting to undergo the Ileostomy reversal procedure. Surgery is a great option as well, because he won't have to worry about diet or cancer later on. The small bowel eventually can take on the function of the large intestine, which absorbs the water and hardens the stool, as time progresses. In the beginning life will be different with an ostomy bag, but he'll get the hang of it. If he does get a stoma, make sure to take really good care of it and make sure there's no skin breaks or irritation that could lead to infections. I had a worse case than your husbands, and I am perfectly fine now. Good luck with your husband, and I wish him good health.
