Is anyone on disability? Is it worth it?

I can't wait to retire! I will be 54 this year and hope 63 is the magic number for me!!! Good luck finding a was to relax and good luck on that lottery!!

Hi everyone,

Being new here, this is my first post. I am on long term disability and have been for about 15 months. I have not had alot of time to read here yet to compare my condition with everybody else but i am at about 20 bm's per day on average and my med's do not work so i am now looking for alternative medicine before i give up and go for the surgery.

Being on disability i can say is no joy, it is boring, lonely. I would like nothing more to be cured or atleast go down town to 3 bm's per day and go back to work. It seems everytime I try to do something, i have to stop and go the the bathroom. I sleep about 1 hour at a time at night, sometimes 2 hours if i take a sleeping pill but i pay for that in the morning.

The only reason I have long term disability is because I do have benefits at work which i pay for.

That being said i will be doing some reading in here and probably looking for help, especially on what people find they should eat or take or not....

Yeah my eating habits are atrocious, which is why i feel i'm down this path, contrary to my doctor who says he feels diet and eating habits have nothing to do with it. I still really find that hard to beleive...

I am not a vegetable/salad eater (hate them)but well cooked carrots i can do. Lol

I read somewhere in here the other day when i first came across this forum about Omega 3 helping peope within a months time. But after taking only 2 capsules (1270mg each) yesterday my day and night was just horrible and i really can attribute it to anything else so i'm a little scared to try them again today !! Lol especially when i should apparently be taking 4-6 of them per day.. thought i would start of slow, probably a good thing i did

In most cases I don't believe diet had one iota to do with coming down with this disease. UC is an autoimmune disease and most of us here are prejudiced in the fact that they really don't truly understand anything about autoimmune diseases. They simplify this disease as a disease of the colon and since what we ingest has a lot to do with what is in our colons, then there must be some kind of connection. The fact is that people with many types of diets, including extremely healthy ones, come down with this disease. I think people would get a better understanding of things if they were to read up on other autoimmune diseases, which would give them a better perspective of the bigger picture and not a narrow minded view of this one particular disease. However, you could make the argument that a bad diet leads to genetic mutations, which in turn might trigger an autoimmune disease of any kind, including UC. There are, I believe, literally hundreds of different autoimmune diseases.

Having said all that, UC does damage your colon, which in turn can cause dietary problems and by eliminating certain foods that are no longer tolerated well by your damaged colon, you can get better. So, in this sense, diet can matter and doctors are wrong in this regard when they say that diet has nothing to do with it. But, since diet did not give you your UC in the first place, while an altered diet may help your condition, it is usually not going to cure it because it wasn't what caused it in the first place.

Gary, you're on fire! Here's an example to support your theory. My Dad has been a woodworker all his life and RA has attacked his lungs. The RA has not attacked his joints like you would think. I believe wood dust and other chemicals from woodworking triggered RA to attack the lungs. He has permanent lung damage now bc the autoimmune disease when undetected.

Old post from me! I have since been reinstated and did not lose any coverage dispite the fact my oncologist gave false info to social security.
That was back in the day when insurance companys did not cover pre-existing conditions.

If it helps to know, medicare premiums are about 110.00 monthly and do not cover meds. My secondary insurance is through my husbands union. He had to retire early to receive those benifits and took a huge cut in his pension to do so. He was on the job wait list since 2009.
My premium for that is a little over 300.00 monthly-300 yearly deductible 1500 total out of pocket 5.00 for prescriptions. My only scrip is for Lialda and only once had to order Rowasa generic and Canasa.

For me, this is a great deal because medicare does not have a cap on out of pocket expenses.

No one chooses to be on disability, for most it becomes impossible to work. There is an attitude out there that people on disability are "working the system" I'm sure there is a certain amount of abuse, but most are simply trying not to end up on the streets. The attitude towards sick people is terrible these days, with the rich getting more benefits (via tax breaks and corporate welfare) than the poor and ill. Certainly the world's wealthiest countries can take care of the most unfortunate among them?

Good point Judy2 But...The "private disability" providers require you to apply for Social Security benefits to offset what they have to pay you in the event you become disabled. So even though you have private disability insurance, you still end up on SSD. They all have it written into their policies, so the consumer has no choice.
