I am on day 5 of 14. Looking at the posts, it seems like everyone has flares and remission on drugs. And I have had flares and remission without. Has anyone reached total permanent remission with drugs?
Uc is classified as a disease characterized by periods of flares and remission. There's no medication or alternative treatment (other than surgery) that can prevent that. Studies have shown reaching a complete histological remission (that is no symptoms, an endoscope with biopsies showing no signs of active disease under the microscope) have the longest possible time between flares. Studies have shown that those who are compliant in taking their maintenance medications have the longest periods of remission and the shortest flares.
Judy2 and red34 have been in remission 10 and 8 years without a flare thanks to remicade. Some have been in remission 12 or more years (can't remember the names or exact lengths) using only the mild anti-inflammatory mesalamine medications.
If your uc isn't well controlled, then a flare every couple years is normal.
