Someone was on here a while back who lived in Egypt and they got a chemist (pharmacy) to make them mesalamine enemas without the sulfites, otherwise not available there. In the US we call these "compounding pharmacies" because they custom-make certain meds instead of getting them mass produced. Do you think this is possible in UK?
That would be me, i think i should update the original thread as i am doing great on the compounded enemas thankfully specially after using Xanthan Gum as a dispersing agent which resulted in more even consistency and longer shelf life even without preservatives.
@NCOT i didn't have an allery to sulfite i resorted to compounding the enemas as they are not available in Egypt,i have a couple of tips for you.
- Anxiety can play a big role specially in triggering colon spams and gas production in the colon which some calls ibs, so calm down you've already been through hell, take it slow please.
-i have experienced what you just described with using the suppository and i am not alergic to either sulfa or mesalazine, i was very badly inflamed at least you retained it for an hour, if you could increase the time by only 30m daily, in only 3 days you'll be able to hold it long enough (4 hours) for the suppository to be totally absorbed.
-i presume you already know this, but try to avoid anything that would make you gassy before using it, also some use a water enema just to clear that area before applying a supp or a mesalazine enemas.
- try covering the hard supp with KY jel and also applying some KY jel on the anus, to avoid as much irritation as possible.
-distraction works wonders, try watching tv/netflix/book ..etc just to keep your mind off it
-you'd be surprised but i think the enemas will be better since they are softer being a liquid and less irritating than a solid supp, also they contain agents which make the medicine stick to mucosal walls, so even if you couldn't retain it for a long period you'll at least have some left and you can control how much you apply from the enema.
i am hopeful that what you're experiencing is just inflammation and not an allergic reaction, and it will get better once it calms down.
