I am so sorry about the health issues that hit your family this year but your recovery is awesome and an inspiration for the rest of us.

Hi everyone. Haven't posted here in many years, in fact had to regester because i forgot my username and password.lol Anyway, I've had uc for over twenty years. Real briefly I just want to say, that I was put on Flagyl and Cipro for something completly unrelated to UC. I'm a competitve cyclist and I believe I drank some spoiled chocolate milk I had for recovery. Anyhow, not only did that issue clear up but so did my UC. I'm having the best remisiion I've ever had in my life and my cycling has gone to another level because of it. My Dr. will not recognize that it was the antibiotics that put me into remisiion. He says it's a coincidence. Either way, i told him, if I flare again we are going on the antibiotics again. No questions asked. I think this is going to put a big bug into all the Pharma's that make all the UC meds. Anyway, I came here to back the anti-biotic treatment.

I am so encouraged to hear that you are still in remission after your antibiotic therapy. I have a very similar story and I hope I'm not speaking too soon here. My son (19) was diagnosed with UC a little over a year ago, however he has told me that his symptoms occured many years before diagnosis. He was immediately put on Asacol which only helped a little. Basically, he never really told me that his symptoms weren't getting better, so I had no idea that he was still in a flare up for the past year. Recently he was hospitalized due to abdominal pain and his WBC was elevated, so I asked that they put him on flagyl and cipro. Well, 2 weeks on the antibiotics and for the first time in a very long time, he has had no UC symptoms at all!! He has been off the antibiotics for 5 days now and still no return of UC. He had an episode of pain for about 7 hours, shortly after stopping antibiotics, but that could have been something that he ate.

I must say that I am quite hopeful that this will be the beginning of a long remission. If the symptoms return, I will not hesitate to ask for the antibiotics again.

This treatment for me causing unexpected long term side effects. My left eye now is being attacked by White Blood Cells. I have to take prednisone drops in it frequently since it hurts, its also blurry. Its a barometer now for my immune system. If I eat something that triggers my immune system my eye will start hurting within 6-12 hours. I have never had problems like these until I was taking the triple dose per the Japan study.

I know this is a really old post but checking in to see if anyone has tried this recently. I'm hit upon this therapy after my 10 year old son with Crohns had fusiobacterium varium showing up in ubiome results. Since my son is 10 years and tetracycline has side effects for kids worried about it. But probably this is the best fit based on the fusio patheogen that showed up in his stool study.

We are in the process of discussing the therapy with our sons doctor. While we are in this process would like to know how people have responded to this therapy in the recent times. Or if there is any better alternative in antibiotic therapy.

Yes. I still do a sulfide free rowasa overnight and take 3 asacol HD and 6 salofalk tabs/day (I've tried many times to get off the salofalks because I have to get them from Canada at full price out of pocket). The nurse at the docs office told me not to try to taper any of the mesalamine meds until my body completely recovers from the steroids (6 months to a year). No rush since they are remarkably safe (for most people).

My priority will be to taper off the salofalk tabs.

2011 has been a crazy year. My wife had breast cancer surgery in the summer, and my 11 year old son had surgery last Friday to repair a hernia in his groin area. My wife is doing fine, they say they removed the entire tumor. Son is fine too. The hernia was a birth defect that could have left him sterile. So far so good.

I recently read this thread and noticed that you're still active on hw. Sorry if you already detailed this in another thread, but I assume your UC came back after the triple antibiotic therapy? If so, how long did your remission last?

I'm curious because my doctor recently prescribed me metronidazole (haven't taken any yet) and I think I may ask for a course of the three antibiotics specified in the study cited in this thread. Do you have any other advice going into this antibiotic treatment? Any sort of maintenance therapy you might think help with maintaining remission? If you flared after your course of antibiotics, did you try revisiting antibiotic therapy a second time?

I seem to remember the triple-antibiotic treatment going horribly bad for a few who tried it. Sounds good on paper, to reset the immune system or whatever. Reality is that opportunistic baddies are most likely to spread like wildfire and put you in an even worse place than you were originally....

Thanks for the input. That's a valid concern. It would certainly be nice if a test were developed to better target the antibiotic treatment towards those who would benefit. This is of great interest to me though, since I've failed every biologic & immunosuppressant I've tried.

The only thing that's really resulted in significant improvement is a 10 day course of metronidazole. I was prescribed this in spite of stool tests showing negative results for a myriad of pathogens. Makes me think a large part of my problem is bacterial/pathogenic in nature.

It's certainly not something to pursue haphazardly, but does have some good results supported by several studies (including some newer studies on pediatric patients).
