Any issue taking both Sulfasalazine and Mesalazine?

Hi guys,

As far as I can see there is no negative interaction. So hypothetically, would one be able to take sulfasalazine and mesalazine, not to the excess of 3g per day total?

Actually because sulfasalazine is beneficial for alopecia areata, while mesalazine is not.

They'd be a good question for a pharmacist, regarding if there are any known interactions. Guessing no, but who knows. It may not be known.

Can you take just straight Sulfasalazine? That's easier. Some here do and it's great for uc treatment. That's what I'd do in your case, forget about the mesalamine.

Both have the same active ingredient. So in actual fact you'd be doubling up with the same medicine. You hardly ever see drugs from the same class of medicine being prescribed. It's bad practice in the medical world.

But to answer you question, there isn't really any known interactions that exist, but the likelihood of side effects increases.

So....you're talking both oral, or oral and rectal?

I'd take 3 to 4 grams daily of just Sulfasalazine (the maximum uc dose) and treat both conditions with a single medication. Sulfasalazine is broken down in the gut by bacteria into mesalamine and a byproduct. Mesalamine is an anti-inflammatory medication.
