I like the idea of complete healing but I feel like people would burn through the options really quickly if they went for that. I actually had really good remission with the lower level drugs in the beginning. I was able to maintain on Asacol for a year or two and my scope looked "normal" during that time. I am not sure if it was perfect, but regardless, I was a non-responder to biologics, so you see where I am going. If we were going for perfect, I might have ended up having surgery years ago - which might have been for the best but I definitely wasn't ready at that time.
Surgery can't be a picnic. Stinks that your disease got to that point. Is there evidence that we actually "burn through" our treatment options?I meant burn through, like realize I am a non-responder WAY before I realized. I didn't try biologics for 5 more years... That's 5 years I had a colon. It only worked well for about
2 of those years, and I fought for 3, which probably wasn't beneficial to me - but I wasn't ready to think about
surgery...
For some people, mesalamine or remicade might work well for them for an indefinite amount of time, no one really knows. Remicade hasn't been around that long. My UC wasn't responding to anything and the things I got brief response out of, lasted between 6 months and 2 years, then failed miserably. Even if a new drug came out, and I responded (which I imagine the likelihood would be about
2%), I'd be counting down to the next flare up. Surgery has been much better for me.
