Have you ever sat up at night thinking about your UC? Ever come up with a stupid theory on what causes it? I've done this so many times and thought it would be interesting for everyone to share their most ridiculous theories on the underlying cause(s) of IBD/UC. I'm not talking about rational theories, although you're welcome to share those too. I'm talking the thinkin' outside of the box type stuff.

Not completely left-field, but not based on any research:

1) cleaning supplies and antibacterial wipes killing off beneficial bacteria in our large intestines that allow problematic bacteria to flourish, leading to UC.

2) emulsifiers and other food additives messing up mucosal layer and feeding problematic bacteria.

It's so clearly something environmental. If it wasn't, IBD rates wouldn't be skyrocketing.

I got hung up on the whole distance of the equator thing the other day. Those of us in colder climates are more likely to develop IBD. Why? Because we swallow so much mucus that runs out of our noses in the cold weather our colons just decide they don't need to make it anymore LOL.

How about this one, I've seen people mention this and it's true for me.

I held it in too much when I was a kid - I seriously didn't use a public toilet until I was in my 20s...

I first had symptoms when I was a teenager. I've never really been very curious about what caused my UC and more interested in treatment. I suppose it was easy in the beginning when flares could be temporarily controlled. I guess when I wasn't flaring I would put it out of my mind. Mary

After watching the show "Monsters inside me" I am sure it was some sort of gut eating amoeba from an unknown source.

My UC symptoms started about 4-6 months after I became sexualy active. I sometimes wonder about that...

I blame all the do good ears in the UK that banned smoking, every time I gave up I would flare! Gave up nearly four years ago and have had toxic Megacolon, sepsis and constant bleeding! Right now I could do with a fag (sorry USA) it means a cigarette to us Brits. Every time I get really peeved with this ruddy disease I want to have fag but can I afford them now at £9 a packet or about $11 to our friends over the pond.
Smoke and stop the bleeding would only hurt my pocket lol

Pregnancy. I think it might have altered my immune system in some way that it just could not regulate itself. I have heard of so many people who developed UC after pregnancy.

Also lack of sleep didn't help.

Maybe it had to do with the BV I had when I was in my 20s. I got symptoms shortly after taking flagyl for BV.

Apparently the screenwriter for the film Alien had Crohn's.

He certainly nailed it to perfection in the chest-bursting scene, down to the sweating, apparent recovery and starving hunger before the death cramps from hell strike. (Just move the action down to the bellybutton, that's the only difference I would make.)

Anyway, I reckon I have a baby alien living inside my guts which hasn't hatched yet.

Since we are talking ridiculous I often wonder....I have never been able to eat lettuce or bananas - since the time I was a kid. I would get these horrendous pains - which I thought were in my stomach but now know it was in my colon. Slowly, over the years that list of "bad" foods has grown to now include all raw fruits and veggies, beans, etc., etc. So here's my theory, I have always lacked an enzyme to allow the proper break down/digestion and over the years it ate away at the lining of my colon which is now so thin that any irritation causes ulcerations similar to those that would be caused by eating thumb tacks and razor blades - at least that's how it feels sometimes. Ridiculous yes, but that's my theory and I'm sticking to it!

OK, here goes.

I had a UTI in...ummm... 2005.

I started having symptoms maybe two years later, late 2006/2007.

When having the Prometheus Serology 7 IBD panel, my anti-Cbir-1 antibodies were waaaaaaaay out of the normal range. This indicated CD more than UC. I called the company and asked them if anything else could cause that antibody to be so out of whack. They said a UTI.

Since that antibody is related to CD and to having a UTI and I got CD relatively soon after the UTI, I've always wondered if there is some connection.

Yup, I hear your dilemma. They are expensive down under too but.......

Don't forget the hurt to lungs, heart, brain, eyes, skin, limbs and the rest of the body. Those evil suckers kept my UC unknowingly at bay until I decided to quit for my health - ***!

Patches no, gum no, light a smoke and pulls me out of a flare quick smart. Then I have to suck it up and stop again. It's gotta be some sick joke, right?

Smoking killed my father. Don't rekindle that addiction.

Okay here is mine. In April of 2008, I had a filling break and fall out. Because I am a dentist-phobe, I didn't nothing about it. It didn't hurt, and I just chewed on the other side of my mouth (I eventually had it fixed in October or November of that year).

In June of that year, I started noticing the first slight symptoms of UC and over the next few months ramped up into the usual thing we all know so well.

Sometime later I read about how bacteria in the mouth can cause issues elsewhere in the body and I wondered.............

Shortly before I was diagnosed I travelled to Sri Lanka on a study abroad trip. We visited with a local family and they made us a wonderful lunch. After the lunch we did a tour of their house and gardens. We looked in the well the got us water from - and there were fish swimming in it!
They told us the fish eat any parasites in the water... but I wonder...

I was vegetarian for 4.5 years and avoided gelatin. When I was dx my research on diet said gelatin is super healing for the gut. I cringe when people tell me they're vegetarian now...

I had resection surgery for diverticulitis and never healed. Infection from surgery. Crazy huh

I think I got the UC bug about 8 years before it presented. After swimming one day I came home and has the most agonizing cramps, had never felt cramps like it before, then they went away and never came back...until 8 years later when the cramps started up and just kept going until I got bleeding etc and was diagnosed.
