Ulcerative colitis may be treatable with vinegar

If seen a few articles on this the last few days and thought others would find it interesting. Plus it sounds like fun to discuss. Personally I'm taking it with a grain of salt but it certainly gets your attention.

Wow, lol wouldn't that be cool!! I'm gonna start eating it daily with my cucumbers instead of salt on them and see if it helps my IBS since my crohn's colitis is in remission, who knows, it might help with my IBS since it's suspected IBS is also triggered by bad bugs too.

Vinegar isn't my favorite flavor by any means but I'd eat it daily if it meant no more gut issues of any kind!

Interesting.....i know there have been others who have taken apple cider vinegar.
Haven't heard of it as an improvement for UC.

The journal is reputable, but more research is needed. Also it was mice vs humans, and DSS colitis (Sodium induced colitis) vs true UC.

However it did suppress Th1 and Th17 signals in the immune system, similar to some anti-inflammatories. (It is funny when people complain that meds/research is just trying to manage the inflammation instead of cure UC; but I don;t think those same folks would complain here. Just saying.)

BUT. I think it is incompatible with the delivery of most coated mesalamines. So maybe have to swich meds if trying both.

Many of the delayed release coatings, depend on the less acidic (more basic) pH of the colon. If the acetic acid is going to have an effect on immune signaling in colinic tissue, it is going to make the colon more acidic.

It does make sense that acidity manipulates distribution of gut microbes. In fact, it might be that manipulation that actually changes the immune signaling, and not the acidity directly.

I drink vinegar (I didn't read the link) to treat the Thrush caused by my antibiotics. When I have a Thrush outbreak the symptoms mimic a flare.

Now that would be awesome...drink a little vinegar, throw it on a salad and UC is controlled. I am curious to hear the discussions about this. Who will be the first to discuss a vinegar enema?lol.

YEEEOUCH !!!!!

I am a big vinegar eater. I don't think a day goes by where i don't have some. I have the apple cider type too. I remember there was some hype about this in the past and a bunch of members were taking some daily. I don't recall the final verdict, but i can say, it doesn't appear to do anything positive for me. That said, I will continue to use it regularly.

more hi fiber and acetate see to work the same way on dss colitis and il-18.

Prior to my official diagnosis (prior to my colonoscopy I googled and self diagnosed), I tried Bragg's apple cider vinegar. It did wonders for my IBS, and acid reflux in the past. However for the UC, it didn't have any effect. I only tried it once though. Maybe once my meds are tapered, I'll try again.

My dad has Diverticulitis and drinks 2 tbsp of ACV with the mother in it every single day. He hasn't had symptoms in well over 6 years. He convinced me about a month or so ago after a hospital stay to jump on the bandwagon. I can't speak to if it helping with my problems or not, because I am prednisone and mercaptopurine. I can say that I feel better if I take it in the morning than if I take it later in the day.

I can speak to the effects it's had on the rest of my body! My hair is shinier, my nails are stronger, my bones don't hurt as much, and I have way way less muscle cramping. It has also helped with my skin and acne from the prednisone. I just mix a little half acv/half water and use it like a toner.

I DO know however, that not all vinegars are created equal! It has to be the ACV with the mother in it. Drinking normal distilled vinegar is not the same.
