Yay, a step in the right direction (pushed by actual IBD patients) to study diet modification.
I wish the researchers and participants well and hope the study is well organized because it took me a heck of a long time to figure my own diet mod. out. Extremely confusing to sort foods/drinks and determine which ones cause what symptoms.

The reason they are focussing on Crohn's is that there is past evidence that Crohn's responds to diet mod. more than UC (my guess).

I am confused though about the mention in the article that this is the first time ever a dietary study had been done on IBD conditions. Maybe the criteria or the group conducting the study is different. Hard to say.

I've read Dr. John Hunter's books on IBD conditions. He is a UK physician specializing in IBD conditions. He published dietary studies on IBDs in the British Medical Journal and Lancet. His web sight can be seen here:

Curiously the doctor does not believe UC can be helped with dietary changes, yet I've seen many with UC testify that dietary changes helped substantially. It makes me wonder if his liquid diet protocol is flawed for some reason for UC.

Unfortunately, we can only assume that whatever conclusions are drawn from these studies on Crohn's will relate to UC as well...which I know is flawed thinking but with nothing else to go by not sure what else we can do. I can't figure out why researchers don't bother including UC patients in these studies. I also can't fathom why these studies are so expensive.

I am also confused by the Dr. Hunter's unequivocal statement that diet doesn't help UC, when plenty on here and elsewhere would disagree. Add to that some of the confusion about even distinguishing UC from Crohns in some patients and it seems like an even stranger comment.

If you dig into his blog he does also mention they did a trial of curcumin to see if it assisted with getting patients into remission and they found no effect. He says it was difficult to get the results of that trial published, I presume because of the bias for articles showing things that do work.
