Still bleeding and still pregnant!

Hi all!

My adventure continues. I am about 33 weeks pregnant right now and started pred for my flare a few weeks back. It made me crazy and unable to sleep at 30mg. It also never cleared up my bleeding completely despite also using Canasa, Uceris foam, and Lialda.

Currently, I'm still on 20 mg of pred and still seeing a fair amount of blood/mucus/urgency. I guess that it hasn't gotten worse, but it also hasn't gotten significantly better.

I'm supposed to give my doctor an update this week, but I'm afraid he might suggest increasing the roid dosage once he hears that I'm still bleeding. Not willing to do that! Would increasing make any sense given that it never worked very well to begin with? Just want to be prepared for a discussion.

This is the most stubborn flare ever, but I'd love to make it through this pregnancy without any more steroids than what I'm already on.

Youre obviously in a tough spot. Is it safe to take pred while pregnant? Apparently if your dr has you on it it isnt unprecedented... I agree no or less pred is better. Have you tried any natural remedies like aloe, nopal, wheatgrass, deep breathing, meditation, fish oil, etc? Wish I had more to suggest for you. Best of luck.

If your doctor brings up the increase prednisone thing, perhaps suggest adding Uceris or alternatively a steroid enema to your current prednisone dose? As those things would increase your effective steroid healing oomph with a much more limited risk of increased corticosteroid side effects. Because both are 90 percent topical and only 10 percent systematic corticosteroids.

i know you were very adamant that you don't want to start remicade while in the end of pregnancy but it might be time to reconsider that.
This whole flaring while pregnant stinks and I'm sure the hormones and prednisone are making you really incomfortable.

Ugh! I hope you get some helpful suggestions from your GI. Hang in there, only 7 more weeks to go.

I bled like crazy!! One of the only things that stopped my bleeding was juice of green cabbage. No joke!
No medicine or diet helped but than my mom told me about it and to try it so i did for seven days i drank two cups of cabbage juice and my bleeding and inflammation went away!
If your pregnant better not to take meds so give it a try and better to buy organic cabbage. and dont mix with other veggies just plain cabbage

I wish you luck! You're getting close. Just remember, we all wish to get through every flare up without doing anything medically. It just never happened for me unfortunately. No one wants to take drugs. Sometimes it's unavoidable. I really hope you can get things managed. Maybe things will level out for a long time after you have the baby.

Ugh, this is a tough deal. I am hoping after you give birth things will settle down. Sometimes the pregnancy hormones really do us in. Counting down the weeks and hoping for some major improvement!

Thanks, all! I agree (and admit) that it may be time for biologic therapy. I'm not in a horrible situation anymore, but this can't go on forever.

I only have 6 more weeks though until baby time so maybe the pred can hold me stable until then. I have a scheduled csection on May 9th and the thought of starting my first biologic before a surgery like that is a bit frightening, but we'll see. Like some of you mentioned though, maybe this will all level off after birth! Fingers crossed for that!

I emailed my doctor's clinic today and they are going to let me know today if I can taper the pred more. The nurse also mentioned the possibility of considering a biologic. I'll see what the next email/call brings.
